Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Hi everyone,

I just have a query about my little lads arthritis, and its characteristics. I've had some great help from people on here when he was first diagnosed, but have some questions about it!

Fred was diagnosed in march with arthritis and is now on long term metacam and the oxbow joint supplement. He is almost 7. He has responded well to these and most of the time is very good; moving well with a good appetite and being cheeky.

However he seems to go a month/6 weeks doing well, then has a few off days. He seems reluctant to move and is a little wobbly/stiff when he does. He goes off his food a little and seems generally a bit subdued. The first time it happenned I rushed him to the vets who gave him a gut stimulant & extra painkilling jab. He was thankfully fine after a couple of days. The second time it happened, I carried on as usual and made sure he was eating/drinking well, and thankfully after a few days he was back to normal without a vet visit. He has had a great couple of months but has gone 'off' again. He is still eating & pooing well, but isnt his usual pesky self and is doing short stiff hops when he moves :( thankfully he already has an appointment with a great vet on Thursday next week, so I will keep a close eye on him and hopefully he will perk up soon (I won't hesitate to get him in sooner if he declines of course) and I can chat to her about it.

My question is, is it a normal pattern/characteristic of arthritis to flare up every so often like this? I understand it is progressive, but generally is it typical for bunnies to have these off days then perk up again? Is it worth asking my vet if I can temporarily increase his metacam dose when he is 'off', if this is going to keel happening? Thank you x

Yes, arthritic pain can sometimes 'flare up' more. Especially in colder weather or if the Rabbit over exerts him/herself. I have found that massage and Acupuncture can be extremely beneficial for Rabbits able to cope with the 'hands on' approach. Also, adding Tramadol to the Rabbit's analgesic cover can provide more effective pain relief during 'flare ups'. It's advisable to try to get the Rabbit on the lowest doses of analgesic medication possible when using them long term, but obviously the doses need to be sufficient to offer good pain relief. Acupuncture and massage has usually meant that my arthritic Rabbits have managed on lower doses of analgesia for longer periods of time.

I would discuss these options with your Vet :)
