Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Pancur worming for rabbits

Today was the buns yearly vaccination and whilst they were there had a health check.
The vet checked their teeth which she said both had sharp hooks or something like that and i should watch holly as she might need a dental in the future as hers were quite sharp.
Then eyes and heartbeat checked as normal.

Then she took a temprature test from the behind and thats never been done to my buns before if i recall and wondered if this was a new health check thing. Dk any of your buns temp get checked too?

And then she asked which is the main reason im posting this, if they had been wormed before. I said not from my knowledge and she recommened using pancur at least 4 times a year especially if they live outside but also that it would be fine once a year too.

Many here do not reccomend worming rabbits unless need be? what are your thoughts?

*i go to these vets as they are the cheapest vaccinations and close by too*

I wouldn't listen either. I asked my specialist about worming and he said it's not necessary and he's one of the best bunny vets. I think the majority on her don't worm their bunnies but I may be proved wrong!

No. My rabbit specialist also doesn't recommend routinely using Panacur, except maybe once for 9 days if they are being brought into a new environment, eg such as mine where I have many rabbits. This is however for E Cuniculi not for worming.

I don't know why you would take their temperature on a routine check up, I'd only expect to see that with a sick rabbit, not a healthy one that's gone for vaccinations.

To be honest, given that I suspect the vet has limited rabbit knowledge, I would take teeth issue with a pinch of salt too, inexperienced vets often see spikes as the start of spurs when they are actually the natural shape of the teeth and nothing wrong with them.

Very difficult to say .. Vets have differing opinions on 'worming' and it doesn't make them bad. Yes you can worm for 9 days when you introduce a new rabbit, but what does that do if they didn't have worms to begin with? Why not go the whole hog and give 28 days Panacur to cover potential E.C. parasite, which is endemic in rabbits.

The temperature - I'd be pleased if a vet took the temperature as routine. So many vets don't bother even when the rabbit is ill!

My rabbit savvy vet doesn't recommend routine worming. I would be looking to change to a more rabbit knowledgeable vet.

I agree with what most of the others are saying.

Worming rabbits regularly is a bit of a pointless act in my opinion as the ingredient in the wormer is only active as long as it's being given, so in theory you could give a "preventative" dose for nine days and then as soon as you were finished the next week the rabbit could have worms. It doesn't stay in their system after the dose is finished.

Most rabbit savvy vets would agree with this I think, perhaps the vet hasn't studied rabbits specifically. X
