Hi All:wave:
Need to pick some brains if you don't mind.
My little lop Titch has quite regular bouts of like a pre-stasis episode. There are obvious reasons to me why he does this...he doesn't eat enough hay despite the fact atm he has three different types (meadow, timothy hay from 2 different places and oat hay), he doesn't drink enough, he doesn't exercise enough and he's very bonded to me and tends to get stressed quite easily if I'm not around or doing what he wants me to do. He's a very licky rabbit and as soon as they're molting or at the very beginning of a fluffy phase he struggles to pass through all the fur he's swallowing. He's been checked by a few different vets about this issue and we've tried Fibreplex recently and probably will try bio lapis soon, but one rabbit vet I saw who is the best I've ever seen (sadly he's since retired) fully recommended giving him a small dose of lactulose in these periods to help him pass through the fur that seems to cause many problems. The problem is I'm nearly out of lactulose and the vets I now see have told me they wouldn't prescribe that. I know the reasons why and support that but I also believe individuals respond differently to medicines. Titch is quite used to lactulose and I'm careful with it, monitoring constantly and helping him. Most importantly it really helps him more than anything else does. It has definitely helped save his life on a few occasions.
So I'm assuming the lactulose prescribed for rabbits is of the dog and cat solution as is most rabbit medicine as there is currently nothing actually licensed for use with rabbits. I also know liquid paraffin does a similar thing? But I've never used liquid paraffin and would be worried trying something new with him.

As now I have a problem getting lactulose through the vets, I did a search and found VioVet selling lactulose for dogs and cats. Before I get any I just want some reassurance that this is the right solution really.
I'm quite used to dealing with rabbit medicine so if anyone's worried please don't be, I was trained with medicine when I worked at a rabbit rescue
Many thanks
Kelly
