  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Castration - Is my bun ok?

Young Bun
Hey guys!

Back again with another question. So 2 male bucks were neutered yesterday and we checked for redness and swelling like advised. Zoro seemed fine, no redness, no swelling and no inflammation.
The other bun, Oscar, looks like he's got some inflammation? It basically looks like he's still got his testicles and we are a little worried!

They have another vet check this Sunday coming but will we need to take Oscar in sooner or is this a normal process?

It's impossible to say if the swelling is 'normal' or 'too much' without being able to actually see it !! Some Rabbits can have very slight swelling and bruising but as I said, I cant answer your question because I cant see Oscar.

If you are concerned about him and/or if he is not eating/pooing and weeing as normal then you need to contact the Vet. He may require more anti-inflammatory analgesia. Hopefully everything will soon settle down for Oscar and I am glad that Zoro is doing well xx

Hi there. It does seem sometimes as if a boy still has his testicles in tact when newly neutered but they do get smaller and disappear altogether eventually, but if you are extremely worried please speak to your Vet.

Hi, it's probably a good idea to get some advice from the vets if you are worried.

I'm new to rabbits (and mine are girls), but I remember years ago when we got our dog 'done', for a while after it looked like they were still there, until things settled down x

I have only just seen this, and as you've got a check up tomorrow anyway, I'm looking forward to what the vet says. I'm glad Zoro came through OK.

Oscar may have some residual swelling, which is often normal. Sometimes they can develop a haematoma at the site, but that usually goes down on it's own anyway.

Perhaps your vet can assess whether he's in pain or not and prescribe some analgesia if necessary?

Good luck xx

one of my boys had swelling and i took him back to be safe and he needed anti inflammatories for longer with more check ups, you are doing the right thing taking him back tomorrow.
