Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Flo panting?

FloLo

Alpha Buck
So Flo is still undergoing treatment for pneumonia.
Today it is really hot (near 25 Celsius) and she is flopped down chilling but she is panting. She has a slightly higher resp rate anyway but it is clear she is panting. She is in the shade and I just put a water bottle in the freezer.

Much more I can do currently?

Air Pollution is awful this weekend, there's a toxic smog over the south of the UK

https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/forecasting/

So any Rabbit with a compromised respiratory tract is likely to struggle more

Is Flo indoors ?

Ahh no that's not good news as I live in Hertfordshire

No she is always outdoors - she doesn't like being indoors much she loves grass a lot!!

It's tricky then as bringing her in would reduce her exposure to the smog, but it may stress her out in other ways which would exacerbate her respiratory tract problems.

I guess making sure she remains in the shade and keeping a very close eye on her for signs of significant respiratory distress/cyanosis is all you can do. Unless she has developed some pulmonary oedema now, in which case it would be necessary to consult a Vet as additional medication would be needed.

She gets really stressed indoors and she'd be without Tubsy so I think I'll leave her out. She's in the hutch which is shady and well ventilated so she should be ok.
Last time at the vets, the vet thought she had improved a lot (it was much more difficult to hear the abnormal lung sounds on auscultation). She is certainly not distressed - she has been been happy hopping around eating grass and cuddling with Tubsy so don't think it's her resp problems.

I think you're wise to leave her outdoors Flo. I've been out today, and apart from being pretty warm, I think it's fine out to keep them in the shade with cooling bottles and things.

I'm glad to hear she's getting better and her lungs are sounding good :thumb:

Of course if you had a long lead and a fan, you could position it to create some 'artificial wind' for the pair of them :D
