  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

URI, second opinion?

Hello all.

I've been going through the wars with my bun lately, he's all of a suddenly started grunting/snorting when eating/breathing/running ect.
It started when I changed his hay and I didn't notice until I stuck my glasses on how dusty this allegedly 'dust extracted' hay was it was terrible!! So I took him to my vets and the vet checked him over and listened to him weighed him gave him the all okay and prescribed Metacam and said his airways might be inflamed due to the dust, Trix didn't respond to the medication so I requested Baytril he said he has some preferred over Baytril so if they are in stock they'll be available to pick up the next day.. Of course they wasn't so Baytril it was. After a week Trix was slowly responding but nothing drastic so I requested another 7 days and again he improved and the improvements stopped and I've read that this is common in rabbits and Baytril. So I rang the vets and he said "Is there any discharge" so I was honest no but Trix is like his human and very OCD and is constantly cleaning so cause he's constantly cleaning I assume there is a certain amount of discharge. And he refused a change of antibiotics incase he needed them for something more important in the future basically. I feel deflated. Would you seek a second opinion? :(

He's never made these noises before and he was born on 24/5/15 I've not had him since then obviously and the fact he had SOME improvement I honestly have a feeling he just needs a better antibiotic.

It may well be that Baytril is of no effect against the particular infection. Hector ended up with tests of a nasal swab and Septrin in response to that. It may also be that a lengthier course of anti biotics is required as infections can be stubborn. So, yes, I would seek a second opinion if your vets won't pursue it.

These issues can be quite intractable to solve I'm afraid. Yes, I think it would be wise to seek a second opinion, especially as I get the feeling you don't have 100% trust in your current vet? You will need to identify a vet for future reference and it would be good to start the search now, if so.

The other possibility is that it could be an allergy. I have had this with more than one rabbit - hay can sensitise them and cause the symptoms you describe. I have had that too! A kind of aspergillosis.

Rabbits are always constantly cleaning :D

You may well be right, he could need a change of antibiotic, and a longer course. At least you will know that you explored all avenues if you still draw a blank.

Good luck xx

Yeah I think I'm gonna go back to the practice and see a different vet and explain the situation over.

I've completely changed the brand of hay now he's having American timothy hay from www.dustfreehay.co.uk and it's been the best he's had!! Really happy with it, also his bedding is fitch so that's dust free. :)

I honestly do think it was the dust off the other hay's that set off URI off and the Baytril was just the wrong choice of antibiotics this time around.

Fingers crossed we'll get there soon! Thankyou! :D xo

I think what Mighty Max meant was to start a new thread asking for a Rabbit Savvy Vet in your area. Someone will most likely recommend one or two. Hope your bunny gets sorted out.

Great thought Tonibun.

Find a vet who's a bit more understanding towards rabbits. With more knowledge and expertise, if there are any ..

I have had allergic rabbits, and in the end, had to sort the problems myself. But I did, and it worked, so there's hope in every situation :)

He's booked in first thing!! :D

Apparently the practice RCVS accredited practice on the rabbit welfare vet search?

Fingers crossed! I just hope we find the right antibiotic this time. :)
