  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Medicine

There are lots of things that are very handy for having a rabbit that I can't think of off the top of my head, but some that I have found extremely helpful are simethicone (infacol), Ella's Kitchen baby food, recovery food and syringes. It's also good to have things such as saline water and sterile gauze on hand, should one of them have an accident and have an open wound that needs treating while waiting to get to a vet. Others should be along soon to offer advice on the other things that I can't remember! :)

Edit: In regard to the syringes, I have two 10ml syringes and 5 1ml syringes. This is so that if my bunnies need several different medicines I am able to do it all without having to stop and wash syringes each time I need to change medicine. It's also good to have back ups so if one breaks you still have at least one spare. Also make sure you replace the medication, saline water, baby food etc when they get near to the 'best before' so that you won't go to use them and then find they are out of date.
