Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

cataract?

Hello I have noticed a slight blue/white circle in my french lops eye. He is under a year old. I am going to take him to the vet to get it checked out.

Does this sound like a catarct? My boyfriend noticed his eye was red and weeping a few weeks ago but it resolved itself by the time i came home and it hasnt weeped or anything since but i am now thinking he had a bit of trauma to his eye??

I have some eyebright drops in the house by A vogel and ive read it can help reverse eye problems incl cataracts in humans? Has anyone else got any experience of this?

He seems fine and is eating and binkying as normal with no weeping but id hate for him to lose sight in his eye. Can the vet do anyyhing or will they only offer surgery?

Hello again stranger :)

Without a full examination by a Vet it's impossible to say whether the lesion is a Cataract or not. If he had some sort of trauma to his eye it may be that he has developed a corneal ulcer. A Vet would check for this by applying some fluorescein dye to the effected eye. Any corneal ulceration will take up the bright green fluorescent dye. Corneal ulcers do require treatment (eye drops) as left untreated they can become a much more serious problem. They are also very painful.

So in short my advice would be to get a Rabbit Savvy Vet to examine your Rabbit's eye to try to establish a definitive diagnosis and to obtain any treatment deemed to be necessary.

Good luck x

Hi there

As this doesn't sound like something that will easily clear up by itself, I would definitely seek vet advice, as you're doing. However, I prefer to be referred to a specialist ophthalmologist rather than rely solely on a general vet, however rabbit savvy they are. Some people are happy for photos to be sent from their vet to the specialist, or to go ahead with treatment on a phone call only, but I insist for my rabbits on them seeing an eye specialist :)

I haven't used the eye drops you say, but certainly there are eye drops that I have used on humans and animals that hold back the development of cataracts. In one case I was told my rabbit would be blind within six weeks, and several years later he died and his eyesight was still perfect!
