  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I worry too much!

Young Bun
A couple of days ago, i noticed that my 1 year old, un-neutered, Netherlands Dwarf rabbit, Ruby had swollen nipples and they were a bit crusty looking too. However her behaviour and poo's are normal and she's eating and drinking as per usual. So i searched google and after reading a few pages and looking at scary images, it seemed that Ruby had mastitis. Today, I took her to the vet, and they gave her the all clear! She's a happy and healthy bunny :D Which is fantastic news but now i feel a bit stupid. Relieved but stupid . Has anyone else done this?

Always better to be safe than sorry. :D. Glad your bunny is well. I do rush to the vets for anything unusual as rabbits can go downhill fast.

That's what i keep telling myself. Such a meaningful quote :) & thank you, glad I'm not the only one! I've yet to tell my partner that Ruby's fine, he insisted that there would be nothing wrong.. can't wait to see his smug face

All the time :D

You eventually, and slowly, begin to realise what are bunny emergencies and what you can watch and wait over :)

Are you considering getting Ruby spayed? It may resolve the issue you mentioned.

Did the vet say why her nipples were swollen and crusty looking? I would have taken her to the vet too since mastitis can be painful and the infection could even go system wide.

The vet said she wasn't concerned about the swelling and that it isn't mastitis. She took Ruby's temperature and said she's satisfied with it.

But now I'm feeling concerned because two of Ruby's nipples are much bigger and feel lumpy. She's still eating, pooing and behaving as normal. Do i take her back to the vet?

Update on Ruby, her swelling has gone and she's her usual self. I am no longer worried!

Good update. It seems like whatever was causing her condition worked itself out. You may want to check her once in a while just to make sure the condition does not return.
