Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Conscious dentals in Sussex-Final option

Does anyone know of any vets that perform conscious dentals in the Sussex area? Ideally East Sussex as I'm in Eastbourne. I appreciate some people do not agree with performing conscious dentals, however, my rabbit Raisin is having to have them every two and a half weeks to burr down sharp spurs on her cheek teeth. She has been to see a specialist on various occasions and I have had the opinions of several vets, we have tried every thing we can to lengthen the time between dentals but unfortunately this is just how her teeth grow. Due to having anaesthetic so regularly, it is beginning to mean she is not recovering well from her dentals and it is starting to affect her quality of life. So I am now at the point of needing to find someone to perform it consciously. As i have already said, I know this is a topic that many strongly disagree with but I'm afraid for Raisin there is no alternative. She cannot go on having fortnightly dentals as it takes her a good week to recover, it just isn't fair on her :(

Aww bless her, she is gorgeous. I totally get why you wouldn't want to put Raisin through GA so often. I'm afraid I can't help but good luck with your search

I sympathise, I really do. My boy, Toffee, has to have his done every 7-10 weeks, and that scares me to death. I'm afraid I don't know of anyone who does conscious dentals, but then I'm the other end of the country. If I could find one, I would defiantly use them. Good luck in your search, nose rubs for brave little Raisin xxxx

Thanks Jane, although that is a 4 hour drive from me so probably not feasible to do every two weeks. I appreciate your recommendation though.

Can I ask who your Vet is at the moment please?. I was recommended a couple of vets in Eastbourne/Bexhill, but don't know if they would do conscious dentals

Have any of the Vets mentioned a pulpectomy of the offending tooth/teeth ? This would prevent the tooth/teeth from continuing to grow. The only Vet I know of who has definitely carried out the procedure is Frances Harcourt- Brown, although she is now retired from Consulting. There may be other Vet Specialists who have carried out the procedure successfully. Also, apparently the procedure is not suitable in all cases, I think it is only possible for the lower Molars. Although that may now have changed.

I have a feeling Marie Kubiak also does pulpectomies, I think I can remember someone posting on RU about a rabbit they had taken to her for the procedure.

I use Snt Annes in Eastbourne. The specialist we went to was Rob who works at Seers Croft in Crawley.

Ahh ok, yep St Annes was one of the ones recommended to me. Theres Claremont vets in Bexhill 'Stephen White' might be worth asking.

Awww Frankie, I know from our PM's that this was a way forward, and I totally support you :D

I know of a vet who does them, but it's West Sussex. PM if you need further info xx

I haven't had this mentioned by any of the vets I've seen but had researched it myself. I believed as it was so speacalist though it would be near impossible to find someone to do it?

My personal opinion is that molar removal and pulpectomies are last resorts as far as rabbits are concerned. If you can go down the route of a conscious dental with a very experienced vet who can also give you options, that would be my way forward.

It may be that seeing a new vet for the first time, they may want a skull X-ray to asses the situation, but this need not be taken at the first visit. It could be done someway down the line, when she's recovered from all those previous GA's :D

Good luck Frankie xx

You could try to contact Marie Kubiak, she is likely to be up to speed as to any Specialist Vets who could help. Marie is a member on here, but no longer has time to post on Forums. She works here

Me and my Vet have also found both Richard Sauders (RWAF Veterinary Advisor) and Mark Rowland (Exotics Specialist Vet) to be extremely helpful.

If you are a member of the RWAF you could contact Richard via there

He works here:

Mark Rowland works here:

As well as Jane's recommendations, your vet could also try to contact Molly (I believe she is based at Rutland House now). Too far away from you but may know of someone closer to you.

Raisin is beautiful. I hope you can find some help for her.

I think Jill at Honeybunnies has a vet that does conscious dentals but I am sure it is Leicester or somewhere like that which would be too far.

What a lovely rabbit Raisin is. We are lucky that our vet at Forster and Green on the IW can do conscious dentals. He can also do conscious overgrown beaks on vicious biting parrots. Amazing! I hope you get better luck with Raisin. Bless him.

I was going to say try Seers Croft, not that I know whether they do conscious dentals or not, but they're the best (apparently). I use Julie Mewes at the Mewes, Haywards Heath but I'm not sure whether she does them either.

Thank you so much for everyone's replies and advice.
I have found a vet not too far from me to perform conscious dentals on Raisin. She's come recommended from a friend and is very experienced with conscious bunny dentals.
I know this wouldn't be everyone's first choice but I truly believe it's the right move for Raisin. The frequent anaesthetics had been making her so poorly she really wasn't enjoying life. This way she can hopefully get some normality and happiness back.
Thank you again to everyone that posted :)
