what is the average time frame for a bun to fully recover from a diarrhea ?

Happy Hopping

Wise Old Thumper
So my bun has a diarrhea this morning around 10 am. SO I went to the vet at 11 am, and she gets probiotic. This evening, around 7 pm or so, she has some small solid poos, drink some water, and urine is normal. She is eating a moderate amount of hay, but not eating the pellet. So I am worried what is going on.

I have no way of knowing if this is the recovery stage of a 1 time diarrhea or chronic renal failure due to her senior age of 8 or 9.

what is the normal time frame for a bun to fully recover from diarrhea? are we talking about 6 to 8 hr. or 1 to 2 days?

by comparison, if I have diarrhea, I can go back to normal eating w/i a few hr.

It's impossible to say Jason as it depends on the precise cause of the diarrhoea. It could be a one off 'upset' and resolve fully within 24 hours or it could be a more serious problem, a primary cause of the diarrhoea, which needs to be identified and hopefully treated too. Fibre and hydration are essential in all cases of diarrhoea, whatever the cause. It is usually best to keep the Rabbit on just hay and water for at least 24 hours. Rehydration fluids may also be necessary either orally or IV in more severe cases.

If she is still passing diarrhoea after 24 hours I'd contact the Vet again for further advice. I Hope that your Rabbit recovers soon xx

You know, my vet, who's a rabbit specialist, didn't / forgot to tell me about the hydrated part. So I didn't know until just before you wrote the above. I should have go to read 1 of those rabbit medicine book. So I force feed her w/ some water, and about 1/2 hr. later, she went to her spot and do her load. This load is around 10:45 pm (2nd load), the size is from tiny to a few piece of normal size. All once again, they all dried regular poos. It took her 40 min. to unload about 81 piece of poos.

Now, because I read the 5 min. vet consult first, before I see the above, that rabbit medicine book tells me 2 scenario,

1) gives carrot green top, spinach, other veggies etc. to the bun

2) if diarrhea occurs afterward, then go w/ what you said, just water and hay.

So I did give her some organic carrot green top

But I'm surprised it also say it takes 12 to 24 hr. to recover, I didn't expect this to take this long.

As to the cause, the only suspect, could be the blackberry. I do this for anti-cancer purpose. I use organic apple cedar mix w/ 50% spring water, spray on the surface of regular blackberry to kill pesticide on blackberry surface, then I flip them to the other side, spray again, and bring it upstair. So I hand examine ea. blackberry 3 times. Not only that, last night, there is a total of
20 of them. I eat 10, the 2 buns eat the other 10. So about 5 each. It's nearly impossible that there is 1 bad blackberry. Which is the reason that I am deeply concern that this is a renal failure caused by age. But right now, she seems normal

So, let me ask you this, if this were renal failure, would that 1st and 2nd load of poos be normal? In other words, if she has renal failure due to senior age, would every load of poos be wet and soft, or would it still have regular dry poos?

On unrelated matter, my vet said the average age of rabbit is now 12. At some groups at facebook, some said 10. I remember when I first joined here in 2005, that no. is 8

Renal failure does not usually present with diarrhoea as the only symptom. There is usually an increased water intake/wee output, unexplained weightloss, loss of appetite, generalised malaise etc. Whilst some renal impairment is not unusual in a Rabbit aged 10 I doubt that it would become evident by just one episode of diarrhoea and no other symptoms.

Sometimes fruit can cause a disturbance of 'good' gut bacteria so it might be a good idea to avoid feeding fruit, at least until this current GI tract upset has resolved. As I mentioned, fluid and fibre is the most important thing for any Rabbit with diarrhoea and in my experience it can be necessary to feed just hay and water for a minimum of 48 hours and for at least 24 hours AFTER fecal outout has returned to normal. Dried or fresh bramble leaves may also be useful xx

She has continue to generate small poos, in total pass 100+, among them 2 regular size.

I have a new theory: I have 2 bale of hay. They are stored in 4 plastic container. I am too busy to drill holes for vent on those 4 containers. Some say these farm hay needs to breathe. IF not, w/ no air, molds could form on the hay, unless that where the parasite come from.

My rabbit specialist said today that eventhough Minnie went to my backyard last summer, there can be a parasite dormant all these months. <-- I don't believe that, although I have seen an episode in Star trek: the next generation on this.

None of those other symptoms you mentioned surfaces here w/ her.

Jane, I really appreciate your help. I'll kill the carrot top and just get her more hay and water. So far, she's steady.

Hay will get very mouldy and nasty if stored in a container with no ventilation as it will 'sweat' I'm afraid. Can you put it in an old duvet cover as that way the hay will breathe? Or keep it in a small shed?

I do hope your bunny feels better soon. I'd defiantly keep to hay and water for now until everything settles down

I done that last year and there didn't seems to be a problem. So this is just a theory. I can still smell the fresh scent of the hay. See there are 4 containers, the first 2 is semi-empty, as I used up the good hay stem inside. The 3rd one is wide open, and that's the container when I give the hay to my 2 buns.

If this container has hay that get mouldy or nasty, how can I tell? What sign would there be?

Hay that has gone mouldy/nasty will normally smell horrible - fresh hay normally has a sweet scent to it.
It'll also be damp to the touch if its gone bad & many buns will turn their noses up to it, only eating it if they've no other choice.

well then in that case, I still have very fresh hay then, as I just open the last box, it has a very good scent of fresh hay on it

so since it's not the hay, it has to be the blackberry. There is nothing else. W/ serious doubt it's the organic carrot

Update

so at around 5 am on Friday, I gave my bun 75 ml of sub Q injection. Since then, there is major improvement in her case. As of Fri. morning, she's hopping around the house, no more hiding in a spot. As of Fri. evening, she's eating on her own.

Now, on the bad side, her poos is still not 100% normal size. It's about 2/3 of the size of her regular poos. And the part that I'm concern, is that she's still sitting for about 30 min. or more to unload her poos. The 1st time she did it is Fri. evening, there are a lot, but it did take at least 30 min., then she did a few more load after that.

So I gave her a 2nd sub Q of 50 ml on Fri. evening around 11 pm. In short, everything is back to normal, except her poo size, and her duration of doing her load. It seems there is still a lack of fluid, thus, it takes her longer to unload, but the poos that come out is slightly damp like it should be.

Normally, smaller poos size is cause by a lack of water. I can give another sub-Q of 50 cc or watch how she progress today.

I also found out it's not the blackberry. I gave 2/3 of a thin slice of pear, it's meant for 2 buns. But she eats the whole thing before her boyfriend bun shows up. And then this happens. So, no more pear for either one
