Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

experiences of tramadol

we have to decide in about a week whether bisc will go onto tramadol aswell. not sure of the details yet other than it's in tablet form.

so any experiences of using it would be helpful

Several of my Rabbits have been prescribed it. Ours is in 10mg tablet form and I crush the tablets up and dissolve them in a tiny bit of unsweetened berry juice or apple juice. I have not had any problems with unwanted side effects in any Rabbits treated with Tramadol, the drug has provided excellent analgesic cover without the sedation that opiates can cause xx

Noah has been on Tramadol since Dec 15 with no evident side effects. Mine are capsules so I separate them, pour the powder out and mix with water (although reading Jane's post maybe if I mixed with apple juice he might take it a bit better!).

Ive also had good experience with Tramadol for one of my buns.He was on a high dose of Metacam as well. No side effects and he continued to eat well.

brilliant, thank you :D

vet said it would be tablet form and that i would need to crush it and mix it with something to syringe to him. i'm hopeful that bisc will take it directly from the syringe as he does with his metacam and cisapride (although he won't take the cisapride by itself so i draw that up into the syringe first and then syringe up the metacam)

if he doesn't need it started next week then i don't think it will be much longer before he does, so it's nice to hear that it has worked well for others

You won't need to crush it as it dissolves readily in liquid. Just add the tablet or part tablet to a little water, fruit juice or whatever and leave it for 30 seconds then give it a stir with the end of the syringe.
