Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vet update re: Bramble postmortem

Heard back from my vet this morning about Bramble's postmortem.

Apparently the PCR (?) showed no VHD but the pathological something or other had signs of VHD.

The vet is trying to get in touch with the vaccine company (he was vaccinated over Christmas) to ask some questions.

I don't really know how to process this information - if the vet herself isn't sure whether or not its VHD (although from what I've read about it would explain his sudden decline) Especially as he was a vaccinated indoor rabbit, so should have been low risk.

Does this mean anything to anyone? Any thoughts appreciated. (I'm dreading the bill for the postmortem / investigations!)

It's far too technical for me to analyse but maybe VHD2, the new variant "RHDV2" might be a possibility?

The confirmed case at the practice I use (Crab Lane Vets, Harrogate) back in ?December initially the results of the samples seemed to suggest it was negative then another test came back confirming it was VHD, the new variant. Frances Harcourt-Brown was talking to me about the complexities of getting a confirmed diagnosis but it was over my head. I don't know if she's available to advise vets on this but it might be worth pursuing, if she is.

This info might be useful if you haven't already seen it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Jane also mentioned the new strain. My vets were aware of it and it was the first thing that was suggested when he died, so I would assume that they are aware of this and have/are checking for it. I have made a note to query it when I speak to her again to see whether they're able to differentiate/whether it was checked for etc.
