Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Parasites in rabbits

I wonder if anybody has had problems getting their rabbit to walk again after parasite infection? Or didn't realise that problems with mobility can be due to this? and what they did to get their rabbit walking again without falling down? Or has had problems with arthritis.

Do you mean as a result of Encephalitizoon cuniculi (E.cuniculi)?

If so is the falling over due to muscle wastage on the rear legs or because of head tilt?

Has the infection been treated? You need 28 days of fenbendazole and you should also clean the environment (things like litter trays, housing etc) with bleach on days 21 and 28.

It can also be beneficial at the beginning to use a Non Steroid Anti Inflammatory such as Metacam to reduce inflammation caused by the parasite.

Hello Amy, Thank you for your reply. Yes I know about the medications, and my rabbit had E cuniculi and head tilt and she couldn't stand up without falling down. As I mentioned in another post somewhere I kept her legs mobile by making a little corridor out of wood which helped her stay upright and exercise her legs and I'm sure it speeded up her recovery.

Thank you
