Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Other than baytril for sneezing?

sunnibunny

My bunny has been sneezing with mucus for while and she is on baytril for 2 weeks now. They have decreased in frequency but still there. Is there anything the vets can do or prescribe further or is baytril my only option? Is that the only antibiotic for rabbits?

Its the licienced one in rabbits and I think vets have to try it first but there are lots of others. Septrin, Zirthromax, sometimes injectable penicillin are common ones used for snuffle buns.

However 2 weeks isn't that long a course and especially as you have seen improvement you could also try a longer course of Baytril.

You could also try bisolven alongside the baytril, it thins the mucus out.

Doughnut is sneezing. She had Baytril first and it didn't work, she has no discharge and is perfectly happy. My specialist has given her something like Kardox, can't remember the exact name, it's only 5 units twice a day but she is still sneezing so after 2 weeks of being on it I'm waiting for him to call me to let me know my next step. I'll post here :).

In persistant cases it can be a good idea to get xrays of the teeth especially tooth roots, as sometimes dental issues can put pressure on the sinuses.

No it's definitely not the only antibiotic for rabbits, although it's the only one licensed for use. Vet's often prescribe Septrin for that sort of issue, though there is a prescribing 'cascade' :

Here is a list of other safe antibiotics that can be used in rabbits:

Hi all. Well leah has definitely improved with her sneezing. She has been on baytril for 4 weeks now. My vet doesn't want me to give her more, but rather do a swab and find identity of cause and then prescribe specific antibiotic. However these last 2 weeks has such an improvement, I feel that her sneezing and mucus is nearly gone! But keep in mind, I'm not a huge fan of this particular vet at the practice as he put leah on her back to check her teeth( ?!?! Grrr). So can I really trust his opinion...that's the question...as I understand also don't want leah to become resistant to baytril due to long term use. So wondering if I should carry on baytril or not really now. Any thoughts?

usually whatever you use, you ideally need a six week course minimum to make sure all the infection is gone. it gets deep inside the spores of the nose so can appear to go and then 'come back' - usually it never went in the first place. baytril isn't usually the most affective at treating these types of things, so i'd be concerned that it's keeping it at bay rather than treating it, if that makes sense? at least that is what our experience was and what we were told. this was after seeing a non-savvy vet with bisc and matt and going down the baytril route before switching to our vets now, by which stage things needed even more intense treatment.

could you see a more savvy vet for their opinion?

eta: is she on metacam aswell? usually that is used in combination to bring down the nasal swelling aswell :)

If this were the case, what can be done to alleviate such a problem?? Can surgery be done so close to sinuses?

Elongated tooth roots cannot be cured, but the problems they may cause can often be controlled/managed. It would depend on the exact nature of the problem in each individual case.

To be honest there's nothing you can do to 'cure' elongated tooth roots. You can't do anything, sadly, but address the consequences. Elongated tooth roots are so very common in rabbits, unfortunately.
