Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Red wee

Delta

Warren Scout
Delta has recently started weeing red/pink
I've heard this can happen if they eat beetroot but she hasn't had any. The only thing that's changed in her diet is that I've started introducing herbs and this started happening after giving her basil.
Has anyone elses bun had this?

Red urine can occur due to plant pigments in the diet. Some herbs can cause red urine to occur. Basil has a very high beta-carotene content so that is almost certainly why Delta passed red wee after eating it.

Thank you for your reply.
So does this mean she shouldn't have it or is it ok for her to eat it still? x

It's absolutely fine to eat foods that make the urine turn pink/red. They do no harm, but can look rather startling, I agree!

Dandelions have the same effect :D

Mine have particularly red wee when they eat lots of hay (although not when they have different hay to the usual!): it's more yellow/orange when they're on grass. Other than colour there's no difference in it or them :)

Its fine for it to be fed in moderation as part of an overall balanced diet. The thing to watch out for in Rabbit wee is if it looks very thick and creamy and feels gritty to touch. This can be an indication of the Rabbit having too much dietary calcium. For information here is a useful link :

Thank you all!
She has a balanced diet and although I've known that buns can have herbs I've never given her any.
Touch wood apart from this her wee is fine x
