  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Savlon on a bite wound

Stator

I put savlon cream on quite a nasty bite wound. I'm guessing it was a stupid thing to do but thought I should do something at the time.

Shall I try and wipe it off? That will probably upset her again :(

Yes, savlon can be toxic if ingested. I'd get the Rabbit to a Vet this morning as the wound will need proper cleaning and pain relief, abx may also be required. If the bite wound is very severe it may need cleaning up and suturing under GA.

For future reference it is best not to put anything on a bite wound, just irrigate it well with sterile saline and seek Veterinary attention ASAP.

What a silly plonker I am, I got as much off as I could last night. She's fine today but couldn't get appointment with the right vet until 6pm.
I can't believe what a nasty fight it was, I couldn't even pull them apart.

So sorry to hear they have had a fight. You only did what you thought was best!

With wounds I tend to leave them be, keep them dry and let them heal from the inside (on vet's advice of course).

Good luck later on x

Vet thinks it's all fine, just got some hibiscrub to clean it. Wasn't as deep as I feared it might be.
