Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Difference between stasis and bloat?

Hi,

My rabbit Ned is not feeling too well tonight. He is refusing food and had some pain relief about 30 minutes ago. When I first picked him up, his stomach felt really hard but softened up once I started massaging it. If it was bloat, am I right in thinking that it would stay distended? He will be going to the vet soon if he doesn't pick up at all but I like to be as prepared as possible!

Thank you.

Thanks Jane. I ended up taking him to the emergency vets and he had some gut stimulant and fluids. He seems fine this morning so is hopefully back to his normal self. I lost one of my rabbits to bloat in November, which was so heartbreaking so I worry it'll happen again. x

Oh I am sorry, Bloat is awful and it can come on so rapidly.

I am glad that Ned is feeling better now. I'm sure you'll monitor his output carefully to make sure there are no ongoing signs of gut motility slow down xx

I'm glad Ned is feeling better, sending lots of vibes for him. I'm so sorry about the rabbit you lost xx

Your swift action saved the day, and I hope Ned is recovering fully now :)
