Septrin - would you expect your vet to know about it?

I took Doughnut last night to my local vet for the first time in years. She's been sneezing, no discharge, totally happy but since I'm away this weekend I didn't want the lady looking after her having to take her or worrying. Her lungs are clear but he said he could give me some antibiotics if I wanted to. I asked for Septrin as Baytril is a nightmare to get her to take. I had to write it down and they didn't have and hadn't heard of it. He was going to give it for 7 days but I asked for 10 in the same quantity as my specialist prescribed last year.

Would you expect a general vet to know what it is?

It is one of those sorts of antibiotics that has a lot of different names, as I recall. So it might not be quite as odd as it sounds. But, it doesn't sound great, to be honest.

Baytril worked fine last time and she was worse then. I'm hoping it will just stop it in it's tracks.

Maybe that's why then, I did say it was banana flavour though so was a bit concerned. I guess that's why I always go to my specialists but I don't finish work early enough to get there in the week.

Yes I would expect a general vet to have heard of Septrin. My vet routinely gives an 8 day course, but I think 10 days + is far better.

At least they didn't refuse you :)

No and I told him the dosage too! Maybe we should have swapped places.

Haha he did cut her nails for me, it's £14 otherwise how expensive is that! I wouldn't pay that.

Crikey that is expensive  It doesn't take long when I do it, but for them it must just be a few minutes. Btw it's good to hear that you are maintaining Doughnut's excellent standards, by having a pedicure done before she goes away

Well she's on holiday too. The lady who will look after her charges five pounds so would have asked her. It's not that much at my specialist

I would, because I have, but objectively, I'm not sure....how often is it actually used in vet medicine?? It's intended for human children I think so it might not be as common as we bunny owners would think....

I wouldn't judge if the vet did not know the commercial name of the product, it really depends on the country you live , in the availability of the abx & of course on many other factors... My vet uses Cotrim, which is the same as Septrin, but more palatable, it is higher in concentration=less amount & fuss & easily accessible where I live.
What I didn't like about your vet, is that he didn't take the time to see what is the active ingredient of Septrin, and I would really doubt if he is a vet if he didn't know trimethoprim sulfa. It also goes under the name TMPS & is widely used in many animals. He might as well know it & use it, but under a different commercial name, but still the fact that he didn't take a look makes you feel insecure[emoji19]

My rubbish local vet knew what Septrin was, although it was called something different in Sweden. It's what Boris had for his respiratory problems. We did try Baytril as well but it had no effect on him whatsoever.

I will take her to my specialist once I'm back and after I've completed the course if she is still sneezing. There's still on discharge and she's still doing rollie pollies so she's feeling fine
