  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Zithromax Dose

Theo has been prescribed Zithromax at 0.2mls every other day. However from doing a bit of reading this doesn't seem correct and I'm thinking I should be giving it every day. Could someone please advise me?

Charlie is on that at the moment and his dosage is 1ml every day, this is for Pasteurella

Yes it's a long while since I used it for my rabbit, but I'm pretty sure it was daily too. There may be a reason though that it's given every other day in this case?

He has a long standing ear infection and was taking Depocillin. I asked vet to change but didn't see my usual guy and the dose I was given was from a large animal vet who does very little small animal work. He apparently looked up the dose. I took his word as thought finding the correct dose would be easy - he has access to stuff I don't, etc. However from reading on Medirabbit and a few places I think the dose is wrong. My fault though that I didn't check earlier as Theo has had 6 doses of Zithromax spaced every other day. Not sure how to convert milligrams to millilitres so I if the 1ml dose mentioned by Kelly Carla is correct then I'm still under dosing, although she did say it was to treat Pasturella and not ear infection.

Pasteurella is the name of a strain of bacteria. Pasteurella can cause ear infections.

Can you go back, or ring, your usual vet and check the dosage?

It's really not your fault and not your responsibility to double check the dose. That's what we pay the vet for!

He doesn't have any of the symptoms of Pasteurella, but I haven't had any tests done for it, so I guess its possible. Given his age and other health problems I'm more concerned with keeping him comfortable for as long as possible, rather than trying to cure.

I'm waiting for Dave to call me back ( been waiting all day ). I do feel its partially my fault as I should have double checked. I shouldn't have to as you say, but vets do get it wrong and these vets are not small animal specialists. I wasn't able to speak to Dave ( who I male a point of seeing now ) as he had fallen over and needed to go the hospital to get his face stitched. And, I thought how hard can it be for the other vet to look up the dose. I did offer to do it myself but its practise policy to send out drugs with instructions - rightly so too.

Have agreed with vet to raise the Zithromax to 1.375mls per day. I gave Theo the first increased dose yesterday. This morning he is all twisted up and unable to stand or hop unaided  I'm inclined to think it is the anti-biotic. He was this way when he was taking Depocillin and improved when it stopped. I thought it was the penicillin maybe, but as Zithromax is not penicillin based I don't really know what to think. Worried and upset to see him like this. He was running about in the garden day before yesterday. Any thoughts please??

Ring your vet asap.

I have never known penicillin to produce the side effect you describe.

I'm so sorry for Theo
