  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What to ask at rabbit checkups and vaccinations?

Been posting a lot today but just got a new fresh of question sorry!

When you get your bunny to the vets for a checkup or vaccination do you ask certain questions or request them to do certain things?

Yes my bunnies have 2 check ups a year, one including vaccinations.
I always get them to do a full M.O.T-

General health check- eyes, nose, ears, jaw bone, skin, fur, bum and tummy.
Teeth check
Weight check
Nail clip if needed

And if I have any questions (of which I have many each time) I write them down so I don't forget then go through them one by one. I am a vets worst nightmare lol

I weigh each animal any time it goes to the vet. Record the weight on the vaccination card. Very useful for keeping tabs on general well-being, and in case you ever need to work out dose rates eg for wormers or flea treatment.

Check teeth - back and front
Check ears
Discuss any ongoing issues or any new niggles. My vaccination cards usually have a post-it note on with a reminder of what to ask about.

they listen to bunnies heart as well...well they do at mine. Any concerns you have (for example yesterday I discussed Mouse snoring) are useful to raise at the beginning rather than at the end, so the vet can examine in the context of the information you've given.

I always have a list too , general questions (yesterday I asked for bunny choking 1st aid demo) & ones specific to each bunny. I always have to have the vet explicitly tell me if they are the right weight. Even if their weight is unchanged since their last visit

and your bunny's best friend :thumb: they're in good hands with you

Same as rachy twice yearly check up with vaccinations at one.
I like back and front teeth to be looked at
Weight to be checked
nails to be clipped if needed
stomach and jaw to be felt
skin and ears and eyes to be examined
Heart to be listened to
My vets also check bottoms too

Take a list of any questions you may have and make sure you see a specialist exotics vet.
