  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

So worried about my bun.

Young Bun
I've posted about this already but I can't stop worrying.. My buns front leg is broken in 3 places and the vet said to leave it be and give her pain meds which I'm doing and to get in touch if anything doesn't seem right. But I'm so scared, I just want her to be ok, when will she be able to use her leg again?:((((

Did the vet not ask you to take her back for a review appointment? I think I would want her to be seen again to make sure the vet was happy with her progress, not just if you thought something wasn't right,

Well, she said when I get her spayed in about 2 months that they will check on her progress, I just feel like that's a real long time :(

That seems a long time to me. I know my vet would not have a problem if I wanted reassurance that all was progressing as it should. If I were you I would book another appointment for her leg to be re-examined.

It is :?

How Rabbit Savvy is your Vet ?

Personally I would want her reviewed once a week and this may include more Xrays at some stage. If the bones were not knitting together or were not knitting together correctly surgery may be needed. Otherwise long-term problems could result.

If you are not confident that you have a Rabbit Savvy Vet you could ask for a referral to a Specialist. Or you could put a thread up in Rabbit Chat on here asking for recommendations of Rabbit Savvy Vets in your area and take your Rabbit there for a second opinion.

Two months is too long to wait for a review of a fractured leg. Was this your normal vet that you saw, or an emergency vet, I can't remember?

Are you confident in your vet, because if you're not, it's best to look for another. You don't need a referral, you can just go along to any vet and get a second/third/fourth opinion, as many as you like :)

I would also feel as worried as you are ... Good luck xx

I'm with MightyMax & the other advice given.

I wouldn't like to wait up to 2 months for a re-check. Maybe at the most 2 weeks but in such a young animal weekly would be better. (Including x-rays every 2/3 weeks).

If you aren't confident in your vet (or would like a second opinion) you can seek another vet without a referral. Do note, if you seek a second opinion they will contact your current vets for a clinical history & copy of any x-rays taken to help them decide if they agree with the advice & treatment plan you've been given.

I want to go back for another opinion but I'm not in a position where I can afford it at the moment and I feel terrible about it. I had to use the food bank this week as all the money I had went on the first X Ray's etc. Idk what to do

I would take her to the P.D.S.A. I have known people who use it and are well pleased with their standard of care.

She is highly recommended in the area so I'm unsure of what to do

If you have confidence in her then I would make another appointment this week and say that you feel that you would like your Rabbit to be more closely monitored and that you are concerned about the potential consequences should the fracture not heal properly. I'd ask about what plans may be in place re more Xrays and what options there are should any problems with healing occur. Be open and ask if she feels it is a condition she has experience with treating in Rabbits. A 'good' Vet will not be offended by such a question if worded politely and respectfully. No Vet can be the master of all knowledge and a good Vet will always admit their limitations and offer a referral to someone with more specific experience. Remember, you are paying for a service and so the Vet has a responsibility that the service provided is the best available.

I'd also ask about physiotherapy, an important part of rehabilitation if a Rabbit has to be confined due to a fractured limb.

If you feel happy going back to her to discuss the situation, that would be good, as she has all the original information. However, you say you haven't had enough money to even feed yourself, which is why I suggested the P.D.S.A.

X-rays and vet consultations cost a lot of money (well here in London they do!) so perhaps if you want to see your regular vet you could discuss a payment plan?

If when you contact your vet she still feels you should wait a couple of months for a review, you could think about seeing someone else?

Just to add, if you vet is unable to offer you a payment plan they often have charities they can refer you to if you aren't PDSA eligible. This won't affect you attending them again in the future.
