  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering

After hearing other people's replies to my other thread,It has made me lean more towards getting my rabbit neutered. He is still too young(3 months) I know he has to wait another month or two. Is it worth the risk? What is the risk of him dying during surgery? He's a small rabbit. He doesn't spray, bite or show any aggressive behaviours. He pees and poos on the bed but never pees or poos on the floor so is mostly litter trained. Should I get him neutered?

If you don't want to ever get your rabbit a friend then you don't need to have him neutered, if you are happy with his behaviour. If you do decide to have him neutered the most important thing is to make quite sure the Vet is a good Rabbit vet and has performed many successful rabbit neuters. If you don't get him neutered there is a small chance that he may get testicular cancer, but to be honest it is quite rare. I have kept entire bucks for all of their life (8 - 10 yrs) with no problems, although some unneutered bucks can smell a bit more but some don't.

I have two rabbits,a buck and a doe but they're not kept together, they might meet with a divider some time. I have had other rabbits that were never neutered and no problems so I am not sure what to do.

The doe is an older rabbit, she's 6 so I would prefer not to have her neutered. She is an outdoor rabbit and my parents won't let me keep her indoors. My buck(lion lop) is an indoor rabbit.

There actually isn't as much of a risk as there is for spaying. I know everyone says you don't have to get him neutered but I would suggest it. All of my rabbits are spayed and neutered. When your rabbit gets older more problems may arise if he isn't neutered. There is also a risk of testicular cancer . It is your choice but I always get my rabbits fixed.

~BouncingBunnies! Best of luck.

My dog is going to the vet tomorrow, I can ask them about getting it done. What behaviour differences is there for neutering?
