  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Life expectancy of bun with history of dental issues.

Took my 5 year old bunny Blossom to the vets today and had her teeth checked - everything was healthy and fine (phew!)
Blossom has had to have surgery a couple of times in the past due to her very back teeth growing quite long - but this seems to be fine now. Aside from that she has always been perfectly healthy - no issues at all!
Vet mentioned that she might not live to the full age of about 10-12ish (if we're lucky) and that her teeth may cause major issues later in life.
Has anyone had any experience of this? Has anyone had rabbits where dental issues stopped being a problem?
Basically just wanted to know whether others had rabbits who lived a long life - despite past dental issues.
I love Bloss and want her to be around for as long as possible, so hopefully there is someone who can give me a bit of reassurance!

Out of 6 rabbits I only have one who has no dental issues. My two bridge bunnies had awful teeth (also needed dentals approx every 4-5 months, sometimes longer periods between them) and lived to 7 and 8 years but their deaths were not dental related.
I have two 4 (nearly 5) year old dental bunnies and an 11 year old who recently had another dental to tidy some bits up. He is still going strong :D

I have had rabbits that have lived to 12+ years old, who needed dentals on their teeth. It depends on other factors too, like genetic make up, diet, environment ..

Five years is just a baby

Scarlet has horrendous teeth and we think she's about 8. She has no teeth left on one side of her mouth and has had problems with her tongue too. She typically has two mouth related surgeries each year, it used to be 4 but FHB removed the worst of her teeth. She's a very resilient little bun and it'd not surprise me if she outlives our other younger rabbit.

I had a bun who needed denials every 3 months from being 5 yr old ... He lived to be a week off his 10 th birthday

It's often not the dental probs that shorten a rabbits life but more the lack of good treatment .

Yup,my bun Brucie has the most awful teeth-not one normal one.:roll:We think he was never given hay before being rescued(still cant eat it as his teeth wont allow)but it could also be genetics.Sometimes as in his case some teeth will actually stop growing. He has his still growing teeth burred monthly and I blend all his food and he manages fine.Hes very healthy in every other way and we can expect him to live to old age unless other health issues crop up of course.
