Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! Conjunctivitis!

My rabbit Dougal has conjuncitivitis. He has been the vet and his eye has been clean hes on a course of antibitotics, anti inflams and eyedrops. His eye has been completely cleaned but there is still some **** coming out. Does anyone know the best way to clean it or if i should not clean it and leave it alone? I was so focused on how Dougal was in the vets and what medication he was getting i forgot to ask the vet how she cleaned it!

Thank you in advance

Just gently bathe it with cooled boiled water or sterile saline. Use a different swab for each eye to minimise cross contamination of infection and wash your hands with soap and water after you have finished :)

If around the eye lip it is really crusty and the eye closing I found gently wetting an eye pad and holding it gently over the eye - if the water is just Luke warm it will eventually soften the crusts - it takes a white but be gentle as it's easy to damage their delicate eye surface - as Jane mentions use one pad per eye to ensure no cross infection.

I would gently use a dry eye pad to wipe the fur and around the eye dry once done.

Hope his helps.

You could ring the vet (nurse) to get some advice, but in the meantime I would just bathe gently with cooled boiled water. You can add a few grains of salt dissolved in there too, it works as an antiseptic.

Does your rabbit have a friend? They are usually the best at cleaning up their partner's eye :)

Hi thanks for all your advice! I have been using cooled boiled water on his eye with pads everytime ive used the eyedrops and its kept it clean!
Nope hes on his own hes lovely with humans but hasnt bonded well with my other rabbit so they are kept seperate and to be fair i would of seperated them because ive heard the conjunctivitis can be transfered to other rabbits?

It can be contagious, but I've never found it to be that easy to transfer from one patient to another.

One of the best natural cures for conjunctivitis is barely warm neat tea. It works wonders on animals and humans, so you could try bathing and cleaning his eyes with that as extra help to clear it up.

In addition to medication, John Chitty recommends cold tea.

I'm sorry to hear this

Vibes for Dougal's op - when are they going to do it?

Apperently my vets has never ever done it before! Im waiting for a call back off them to tell me whether they can do it at all and how much its gonna be. If not they are going to refer dougal. Ive also phoned another small vet specialist who also said they are going to phone me back. So as for now i have no idea! His eye looks so much better and hes himself but i was told as soon as i stop the antibiotics its just going to come back! :(

Will you be keeping him on the antibiotics until the op then maybe?

Sorry this is causing such a worry .. little tinkers they are x

My lily had it when I first got her. Comamile and honey tea was used to bathe the eye. Cleared it right up. Vet said I could also use golden eye for humans but I never tried that.

So finally Dougal has a pre op on wednesday. However his sore eye os looking as okay as it can do but his other non infected eye is now watering. There is no puss or any sign of infection in his eye but it looks like hes crig in one eye his fur around the eye is all wet. Does anyone know what this means? Is it a early stage of conjunctivitis or something?

It may be conjuntivitis, it may be related to a Dental problem or it may be that he has/had something like a bit of hay in his eye. Without an examination it's impossible to say exactly what the cause is. Could you get his pre op check bought forward to tomorrow ? It's just that any eye related issue needs to be checked out promptly to rule out any corneal abrasions. A corneal abrasion can quickly become a bigger problem if not treated promptly. The Vet would need to put some fluorescein dye in the eye to check for corneal abrasions. It is not always possible to see them without doing that.
