  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny keeps falling over HELP!

New Kit
My bunny (Reese) looks like he is getting dizzy and keeps falling over and before he gets back up he lays on the ground and spasms right before he is fully upright. What do I do?

My opinion and advice is that you need to get him to a vet straight away. Obviously it will now be the emergency out of hours service, but with these symptoms it cannot wait until after Christmas.

I really hope he will be OK. Please keep us updated with how you get on. xx

Thank you for the reply, unfortunately we can't take him to the vet as of now, but maybe we will figure something out. For now we are comforting him by holding him in our hands and cradling him when he spasms so he does not hurt himself. I hope all will be okay.

Why can't you take him to the vet? This sounds very serious and probably will only get worse with time, even if myself (who take animals to the vets after a few hours if not serious) if my bunny did this I'd take him immediately.

comforting won't help - he needs to be seen by a vet urgently. Are you in the UK?

You really need to get him to the vets tonight. Rabbits can go downhill very quickly.

I just talked to a small pet specialist from where I bought my pet and she replied that since he is young (2 months) and we just got him 1 week ago, he might be stressed because of the constant interactions. My friends and family have also been coming over and he might have been stressed from that as well. She said to leave him in the cage for at least 3 days with a damp towel covering it and minimal interaction with him for those days. She said this is common for them to get spasms and stressed because of how young he is still so I hope he gets better.

Sorry but that is awful advice  Especially the bit about a damp towel  please please get him to a vet.

What absolute rubbish! Dreadful advice - he needs urgent vet attention.

If you cannot get him to a vet at least phone the emergency vet for advice.

Is a taxi an option?

It might be worth phoning the vet and asking if they have details of an animal ambulance service (the OOH vets I use have this) if you can't get a friend or neighbour to help or a cab.
Good luck, I hope Reece will be ok. It's rotten timing :(

Good news, my dad is going to come home and we will take him to the emergency veterinary clinic, all the other ones are closed today. It really is bad timing on Christmas eve

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Let us know how you get on and please name and shame the people who advised you of locking him away covered with a wet towel. Animals dont spasm out of stress. All the best xxx
