  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wet tail

Hi, My French lop lives outside where it is mostly covered and I change out the hay etc to keep it as warm and dry as possible. However she still likes to sit where it is wet and now the bottom of her tail is very wet and matted. I keep bringing her in to see if it dries but worry about the change of temp especially as I have to bring in her smaller husbun who the temperature change will effect more. Should I wash her tail in a bum bath and then leave it to dry and brush it out, her fur is very thick and I am worried that it is becoming matted? Thanks for your help!

I waited for mine to dry and then brushed it: I don't have a giant but my little (2.25kg) girl got very wet and spiky-stiff by sitting in wee (she can be an idiot sometimes!). She still gets wet but she keeps herself clean so I worry less now. I don't bring her in and she washes herself eventually and it's all fine each morning. Does it go all the way to her skin? Aboleth had plenty of warm dry fur under her damp bits, but her feet are often wet through on the soles. If yours has got a dry bit under her she should be OK but it might be worth making sure it doesn't get matted: my two get spiky stiff bits (especially Aboleth) but not actually matted.
