  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blindness in a Rabbit

I wonder what might have contributed to Stanley's blindness? I assume he must have been blind when I got him, although he was only supposed to be 11 months. His previous owner had been given him by the previous owner who had bought him as a friend for her Continental but they had fought, so Stanley had been put in a box in the garage, where he had stayed for a while. The previous owner had noticed that he didn't like his head being touched. I had him neutered shortly after getting him, not realising anything was wrong with him or I would have asked the Vets to check his eyes.

What makes you think he may be blind then ? Apart from the fact that he does not like having his head touched.

Does he have cataracts ?

EC can be one possible cause of damage to the lenses of the eyes, especially in young Rabbits.

Poor lad. I have had rabbits with phacoclastic uveitis caused by E.C. in a very young rabbit, but not cataracts.

Have you seen an ophthalmologist with him?

Poor little man.

I'd be interested to know what other signs he is showing. If you'd like you can PM me and I can run through a few simple tests you can do at home which can help to monitor it if he's been seen by a vets.

His eyes look clear, and no other signs really. He feels his way around and before he jumps on his low table he feels where it is.
