A thank you to you all (Shadow at emergeny vet last night) POO PIC ADDED!

Kara

Warren Veteran
So I went to feed the buns last night and was instantly worried as they didn't hoover the pellets up, thought they just had the ump as been under cover all day, has anyone else noticed their buns giving them the evil eye?!

Susan started eating, she usually has to wait for Shadow but he was too busy pressing his tummy in to the hutch floor, he was moving around but I could tell he wasn't right, he was then hunching up in the corner and wasn't even won over by fenugreek crunchies

I gave him tummy rubs and attempted to syringe (childrens iburpofen syringe is the perfect size btw) some watered down pineapple juice, he had a bit of that then somehow ended up stood on my back - yeah you're really poorly Shadow :lol:

This was around 7.30 and I left them for about an hour with lots of tempting hay and dried herbs, Susan must have thought it was Christmas although I did seperate them to see if he was eating - he wasn't so I took him to the vet last night at around 9.30.

The vat seemed really savvy, really had a good tummy feel and spent a long time massaging him, he then tried to climb up the wall

I'm wondering of the bumpiness in the car helped his tum a bit? He was poking his head out of the cardboard box as we got to the vet, yes that's right I had to out him in an amazon box  as I hadn't put the carrier away and it was full of water

So he had painkiller and gut stimulant and the vet wasn't too worried and said it looks like I had noticed quite early and he'd be better off at home, she gave me a syringe with the instructions of "get 5ml of his food with water down him" oh joy! But he took it fine, phew!

So we came home and I put him to bed, woke up numerous times in the night feeling sick with worry.

Went straight out to check on him, mild panic as only Susan came over.....saw him tucked behind the door but lo and behold he looked happier AND HE ATE A FENUGREEK CRUNCHIE AND DRIED HERBS wooooop

Nathan has been out to check on him and he snorted down the fennel that was offered and half a crunchie and hand fed him some pellets, he didn't eat from the bowl but did by hand

So anyway, I wanted to pass my thanks on, I have learnt so much from being on here!!!

I did notice lots and lots of tiny poops this morning, is it likely they are his? normally they both do biggish golden ones, these were pea like and darker....

Its very likely the poops are his yes, that's how Milo's poops were when he was recovering, you will find as long as *touch wood* he improves they will start looking normal. Milo's were really dark and tiny.

I'm glad he seems to be getting better! Keep it up and well done to you for spotting the signs to early Kara! xx

P.s I found after Milo's bouts of stasis some of the prebiotic in his water helped him to bounce back and his tummy to get back to normal. https://www.thehayexperts.co.uk/avipro-plus.html xx

Ooh thank you, I used to give this to Cookie, she had her incisors removed and this really helped her, I will get some.

Nathan messaged me a video of him hand feeding Shadow a pellet, he snaffled it up but wouldn't eat from the bowl, he is now though YAY

ETA; Nathan usually tidies their living space in the day but I asked him to leave it today so I can do a poo hunt

ETA AGAIN; The vet was so good, explained why it all happens and although I had a vague idea she has filled in the blanks, she said don't go home and feed him random stuff, make sure it's something he would usually have as that's what the gut is used to :thumb:

It just makes me sad to think of all pets out there that don't get seen on time....

Glad to hear that Shadow is feeling better now. Very small poo often occurs during the recovery phase of gut stasis. I concur with Sarah re the Avipro Plus. Whilst probiotics may not be of any benefit due to the fact that a Rabbit has a very acidic stomach which may actually kill off probiotics before they get to where they are needed (the cecum). However, PREBIOTICS are NOT killed by any digestive enzymes

PREBIOTICS can aid absorption of dietary nutrients and increase the proliferation of naturally occuring 'good' gut bacteria. I would always use a PREBIOTIC now for any Rabbit with GI tract problems. I have seen first hand the irrefutable benefits from doing so,

Kara, so glad to hear things are improving :thumb:

Yes, many people don't think it's urgent or even important to get prompt treatment ..

I just can't wait to get home and give him nose rubs, I knew he wasn't right as he stayed still in my arms, he's not a snuggle bun!

I've been foraging, managed to find some plantain :thumb: and plenty of brambles :D

Plantain is fabulous! I was recommended to use that with Milo because he obviously has a sensitive tum. He hardly gets any fresh greens now, just loads of different forages, fibafirsts and hay!

*touch wood* so far he hasn't relapsed. xx

Hi Kara

I'm sure you know this already (were you at the owner's day in April?) but exotic specialists have discovered that probiotics and prebiotics are destroyed by the rabbit's stomach acid and although not at all harmful, shouldn't be relied upon as a method of getting your bunny better ...

Pre-biotics and probiotics were mentioned. It has been shown that they may increase the rate at which commercial rabbits can be grown, there is no evidence to support any medical benefit to rabbits or if they can help rebalance gut flora in poorly rabbits.

Oh crikey!

Thank you xx

Shadow is heaps better, Nathan encouraged him to eat throughout the day yesterday and I went foraging and came home with brambles & plantain & dandelion.

He devoured everything put in front of him

Lots of these little poops in the hutch, he kindly left them in front of the litter tray for me
