Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Dirty Bum

Mariac1510

Young Bun
I am at wits end with Bluebelle's bottom. I am hoping someone might have a idea that i haven't thought of.

No matter what we do she has a dirty bottom and it gets worse, meaning she had lumps of hard poo all underneath her bottom and tail. She just seems to be a dirty rabbit.

She's a good weight ( we thought first she was over weight and wasn't able to reach to clean herself) she is on a 80% hay diet. She gets cleaned out twice a day ( a full clean) and they are on puppy pads with papers underneath to try and keep them as clean as possiable. I started shaving her behind as she's really furry to stop any poo attaching to her, but still she gets mass on her tail / underside. She is quite a difficult rabbit to handle, that's why we started shaving her at home as she responds better, our specialist kept wanting to sedate her to shave her. The vet has seen her so many times and doesn't think anything is wrong.

Any ideas?

What are her poos like, are they wet and mushy, is she eating her cecals ? Has she had her teeth checked ? My bun Toffee has ongoing dental issues and has to have teeth burned down every 5/6 weeks. In the 2 weeks up to his dental, he too gets a mucky bum, as he cant chew his hay. The nurse always cleans him up, and clips round his bum whilst he's still under G.A. Is your vet rabbit savvy, if not it might be worth asking on here for recommendations in your area. Good luck, I know what an awful worry it is.

Can you list exactly what her daily diet consists of. Also, what is her living environment like ? Is she a single Rabbit and if not what is her 'status' in the hierarchy with the other Rabbit(s).

Is she spayed ?

I assume that your Vet has completely ruled out any dental and/or spinal problems ?

She does normal poos but the ones that are getting stuck are the wet ones. She doesn't really have many teeth left after having them taken out and she's been well checked over and gets checked each time she goes to the vet ( which is quite regular) on the teeth subject as they have been such a huge issue before.
Yes the vet is very Rabbit savvy, we swapped to an exotic pet / rabbit specialist when she first started having teeth and mouth issues as our previous vet wasn't up to par.

She did have teeth problems, she has seen a specialist vet quite and they are now in check, she spayed and lives with her little bonded male, she is the boss for sure! She lives in a large children's wooden playhouse that has been fully insulated etc and has lots of excercise.

We give her hay, kale and spinach, grass, no carrots as she has no teeth to eat them. As a treat a little bit of mushed up banana and pellets recommended by our vets. She's been to the vets so many time where he's seen her in a pooy mess an he wasn't concerned.

Ah, well given that she sounds to have quite significant Dental issues, even if they are currently 'in check', she may not be able to eat enough hay to provide her with enough long fibre to ensure that her cecum functions well.

What pellets do you feed ? Excel are known to cause 'mucky bum' problems. Bananas have a very high sugar content, personally I would not feed banana to a Rabbit who already has a 'mucky bum' problem

My vet recommend Protexin Pro-Fibre for Toffee, as he has problems chewing hay. It's a high fibre supplement which you sprinkle on pellets or hay. It has made a big difference to his poos. I've also been giving him orchard grass, which is flat and softer. I have to chop it up for him, but again it has helped. Hope you can find something to help your bun.
