  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Am I worrying too much? Runny poo and loss of interest in pellets, slightly quiet

New Kit
Hello,

We've had our lovely rex rabbit Blodyn for about a month and a half now, she was incredibly untrusting at first and panicky, but is now incredibly affectionate, coming to lick me and my partner frequently in return for grooming her. She is a very inquisitive, full of energy and mischief. Recently we tried brought home our other new baby rex rabbit Appa, also a Rex but much younger at 6 weeks from Pets@home. He was unfortunately immediately very unwell the next morning with diarrhoea, loss of appetite, which progressed into bloody stool, and hospitalisation. We thought we were going to lose him several times in fact. As it turned out the vet believes he had a pre-existing infection which was made life-threatening due to the stress of a new environment which i guess goes to show how fragile poor little buns can be.

He's now making a recovery, and after 3 incredibly expensive days and nights in hospital has been allowed to return home today on critical care food. his poo is still very small, especially compared with Blodyn's usual produce, but is going slowly more firm and normal sized. He has however just produced a more runny one with froth on it in the last 5 minutes. Which is my first concern and question. The vet has treated him for coccydia and he's also on antibiotics and is eating plenty of hay voluntarily, water occasionally, and the vets advises me that she believes it as simple as just keeping an eye on him for the next few days.

Blodyn on the other hand, is now my main worry, one day ago, before Appa came home she went off her pellets completely which is insane seeing as she wolf's them down usually and practically takes my hand off trying to get to it. She's still eating plenty of hay which is great and i'm happy, drinking less water but still drinking it, and then her poop stopped for about 4-5 hours (i think) and then went really small, like a quarter sized, VERY dark, but then got slowly better. She was a bit more lethargic, or rather a little less crazy than she usually is, which is freaking me out. She's just produced a runny poop, I think it was a cecotrope, or an attempt at one and a few very runny poo's. I took her in yesterday whilst visiting Appa, and the vet said she looked fine but to keep an eye on her, I think at this point they just think im some kind of overly worried rabbit crazed mad man. I'm kind of annoyed by the response to be honest, its frustrating to pay 30 quid for a check up to be told "keep an eye on them" and we've just spent 400 quid looking after Appa who's spent more time at the vets than with us. They suggested I give Blodyn Fibreplex which has a gut stimulant/probiotic and LOADS of fibre which is a great idea except the last time i tried she hated it, nearly bit my hand off, stressed both of us out and made her terrified of me and being held for a good 2 weeks afterwards. The vet suggests this is all due to the fact that she can smell Appa above but then he got taken away, then returned, and the fact she wasn't getting as much attention as usual, stuck in her cage whilst i cared for Appa. She also suggested it was possible that she's fighting off the same infection or bug as Appa but as she's older and more hardy, she's not as poorly but still feeling a bit ill.

Anyway, I really do thank anyone who takes the time to read all this, I know its a rant but i'm worried about them both. The vet just doesnt seem to be giving me any conclusive answers here. On the one hand, she's still running about, eating hay and drinking some water, but she just seems a little off and with the runny poo too...

Making sure they both have access to plenty of hay and water, cutting back on veggies for now, leaving in peace for a bit (though Blodyn seems resentful of that) and hoping.

Id appreciate any thoughts or advice, cheers!

Does your vet have a good knowledge of rabbits? If not, you may want to make a post asking people in your geographic area for recommendations.

I sent a response to your other post on diet/digestion

Similar to bunny momma, are you sure your vets are rabbit savvy?

Where about are you? And I'm sue everyone will be happy to help recommend someone for you xx

The current vets is a hospital level practice called Clockhouse in Stroud, Gloucestershire. I assume they have some small animal specialists there but whether or not you actually get one at the time is up to fate. I will follow your advice and ask for reccommendations, we'll be moving to wales soon so it will be handy to know in advance too.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply guys. Much appreciated.
