  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Not eating!

Mayhew

New Kit
Worryingly we've just noticed Phoebe is off her food and not eating. Lots of experience with stasis, but typically its out of hours, and we are out of Metacam, which we would usually start her on immediately, along with Infacol. I do have Calpol and the Ibuprofen equivalent. I know there's conflicting advice, but does anyone know if it's safe to give her one or other until I can get some Metacam from the vet in the morning?

Personally I would not administer either Calpol Parecetamol or Calpol Ibuprofen to a Rabbit. Has Phoebe had a normal fecal output today ? What is coming out is as important as what is going in.

I do think you need to contact a Vet as 'not eating' can have a multitude of causes, some serious and needing very prompt Veterinary attention.

There's a good article here about alternative management of Gastric Stasis ..

I wouldn't give the two meds you mentioned. There may be something helpful in the article until you can get to see a vet either tonight or tomorrow.

Good luck xx

We tended to find if we were out of metacam a small dose of infacol and putting some probiotic in their water bowl helped as well as getting them to move about and very very gently rubbing their tummy. Though you have to be careful with the latter as some buns might get a bit stressed out by it. I always used to also wrap up a hot water bottle and put it near them. Not sure if it helped but it made me feel better.
