Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Finish the course then ask the vet to either extend the course if there's been some improvement, or change the antibiotic.

I'm glad he's OK within himself! :thumb:

If he doesn't improve soon you can ask them to do a culture swab so they know which bacteria they are fighting and can choose the best abx. I hope Alan gets better soon. btw you don't happen to use wood shavings do you as they are bad for bunny.

No Alan is a spoilt bunny he lives in the house on carpet he has a litter tray with newspaper and hay in x

Our vet suggested we try steam to help a snuffles bunny. Not sure if it works but could be worth a try!

Well Alan has been on baytril for 6days today is the 7th he's still making the odd squeak when breathing and his nose is wet he finishes his meds on Sunday should I book him in for Monday or see how he goes over the weekend. He has been so good taking his meds bless him and all through he has been his lively self and eating and drinking well but it's just that awful noise I keep hearing as he is a house rabbit I can hear everything x

If he's still unwell I'd book him in and get the meds extended. He needs to be symptom free really when the course finishes.

If you decide to go ahead with a culture swab make sure your vet realises the bunny must not be on any antibiotics at the time the swab is taken.

It's not necessary to come off antibiotics - in fact it may be very inadvisable. The vet will know to tell the lab what antibiotics he's on and they can get the correct reading.

A deep nasal swab is quite invasive and doesn't always produce results, though ..

Really that's great. The last time I had one done was years ago when you had to take them off for 7 days prior, so its great to know this is now possible. I agree though, it didn't give us the results we were after though I still felt it was worth it.
