My rabbit died and I don't know why

LivvyBunny

New Kit
I found my rabbit dead in her hutch yesterday. She had food, water, grass and hay.
She was previously pulling out hair on her legs but she was not pregnant because she didn't have contact with any male rabbits.
I have buried her and before I did, I noticed that one eye was grey?
She was albino and she had two pink eyes but it turned grey.
Also, she was around 1 1/2 - 2 years old, not spayed and healthy the day before she died.

I am very sorry for your loss  Sadly there are several reasons for a 'sudden death' and only a Post Mortem examination by a Vet would offer a chance of some answers as to 'why'. Even a PM can be 'inconclusive'.

If you have other Rabbits then I'd suggest that you get them checked over by a Vet just incase the cause of death of the Rabbit you have lost was a disease that could effect other Rabbits.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's impossible to say why, and even a post mortem at the vet may not have found a cause.

Have you any rabbits? If so, please stay around with us

Yes, I do have 3 other rabbits.
How much do you think the vet will cost?
I will ask my mum to take me and I have money stored up in the bank that I can use.

Thank all of you very much. She was a great rabbit and I will look for clues or holes in her hutch today

Aww sorry for your loss. I hope your other rabbits get a clean bill of health. You could ring the vet to get an idea of the cost.

Did your rabbits all live together?

Thanks everyone. I will ring the vet maybe tomorrow ASAP and I'll also get my other female desexed because I have been doing some research and there is a thing called uterine cancer?
MightyMax, they all live in different hutches. I swap them around every fortnight and also let them out into a pen to socialise in the day. I had two girls (now one) that started fighting after they were reunited after an accidental litter of babies and two boys that fight, so I had to seperate them all.
They don't share anything the same and I ways wash their hutches down and scrub bedding area when I am switching them around. They also don't use the same hay, food or water, so hopefully if it was a disease or virus, it won't be transmitted easily.
Anyway, should I get all of them checked out? And is there any diseases I can get them vaccinated against while im at the vet?
(Can't get them vaccinated against mexamototis because I live in Australia, but Mosquitos don't worry me as all their hutches have shade cloth around the outside.)

It is definitely a good idea to get your female spayed, as uterine cancer is a very high risk when they get to about 5 years - the probability shoots up to about 80%.

Are your boys neutered? If so, and you have the other female spayed, you may be able to get them together. At least you'll be able to get one male together with the female with little problem. They will all have more space and they will have company for each other.

I think it's up to you if you want to get them all checked out or not. I do understand the cost issue.

There's a bit of info here:

Ok, I will get my girl spayed. Is there a chance that the operation might kill her?
My boys aren't neutered. I used to have a boy rabbit with the girls because I didn't know the gender and I didn't know how to find out, the person also didn't tell me gender, but like 6 months in when they were all sharing a cage together, my female got pregnant.
Can I put a boy with my girl even though he is not spayed? Or should I just get all three of them spayed?

Also, thanks for the website :D

Best advice is: get all three neutered :D
