  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi all my nethie Alan is in the vets today he is quite snuffly his nose is wet, his front paws r dirty from wiping his nose and he is making squeeky noises do u think it's a cold?? Putting my head to his chest that sounds clear but his breathing is more laboured . Anyway he's in the vets at 2'30 just hope it is just a cold and just needs antibiotics xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Rabbits do not get colds as such. It sounds as though Alan may have a respiratory tract infection and you are doing the right thing by getting him checked over by the Vet promptly. I hope all goes well and that Alan will soon be on the mend xx

I hope you've now seen the vet and that Alan has had a good check up!

Although we don't actually call what rabbit's get 'colds' as such, they do appear like that to us humans!

Snuffly is about right - snuffles in fact :D

Sending lots of vibes.

We had a bunny that had a snuffles which tended to consist of discharge from her nose. Originally we were prescribe baytril and when that didn't work she was given septrin but that upset her tummy!

We managed her snuffles with herbal remedies and sprinkled red raspberry leaf on her food and putting drops of echinacea in her water. It didn't completely eradicate it, but certainly helped manage it.

hi, my only bit of advice (obviously I'm not a vet or expert in any way, everything I've learned is through my bun Obi and the wonderful peeps on this forum) is that snuffles can be quite stubborn and that it is a good thing to hit it hard with the antibiotics, over a longer period than 10 days and really ensure it's gone ....but I guess see how it goes, and it might just clear up over 10 days.... I have a snuffles bun (he's nearly 2 years old and has been hit with snuffles twice already) he's been clear for about 5 months, but just over the last couple of days he's been sneezing quite a bit, and he's snotty...so back to the vets we go to try and nip it in the bud.

I absolutely agree Colly! This is why when my vet gave me Septrin for 8 days only and said this was her 'normal' protocol, I wasn't at all surprised that it made not the slightest bit of difference to a snotty rabbit.
