Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit eye problem

coops

New Kit
Our 9 month old continental giant buck has started to get droopy eyes in the last week or so. There hasn't been any discharge coming out of the eye, he's perfectly happy and there's no swelling or sensitivity around the tear duct. Will book him into the vet tomorrow but wondered if anyone had seen anything similar and what the diagnosis was for their rabbit. One reflection, he's always had slightly droopy eyes but they just seem to be getting worse. Picture links follow.
Thanks

Hello, as your Rabbit has always had 'droopy' eyes it could be a condition called Ectropian, this can be congenital in origin

http://wildpro.twycrosszoo.org/S/00dis/Miscellaneous/EntropionEctropionRabbit.htm

From the photo the conjuntiva does look somewhat inflamed and that can indicate some infection, so you are wise to consult your Vet today. Really only an examination by a Rabbit Savvy Vet is the only way to obtain an accurate diagnosis, most of us on RU are not Veterinary professionals and we just try to pass on information we have picked up whilst caring for our own Rabbits

Good luck at the Vets and do let us know what he/she says xx

Hello coops and sorry to hear about your rabbit's eye.

It is certainly showing signs of inflammation ... I have known vets treat the inflamed conductive with an anti-inflammatory eye drop prior to an antibiotic to treat the source of infection.

I hope your rabbit savvy vet can get to the cause of the problem and treat it - Good Luck! X
