  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Abscess

Hi all hoping someone can offer some words of wisdom here. Our rabbit Pudding sadly developed an abscess in her jaw due to an infected tooth. She went to the vet and she removed the tooth and drained the abscess. After a week of being on penicillin, we took her back and the abscess has returned. She was then operated on through her cheek and had it removed again. We then took her back and the abscess was back again... So the vet kept her on and continually drained it for 48 hours. Sadly, today it looks like it is back... Has anyone had any luck with alternative methods for managing these? I don't want her to be in pain and we have spent £450 on her so far. Any advice appreciated. She's only 5.

I can only enlighten you with my experience that abscesses need long term treatment, my rabbit had an abscess removed 6 weeks Ago and we are still going to and fro the vets for the injections. It was left to drain and myself and partner opened the wound il twice a day and cleaned out with hibi scrub and then packed out with Manuka honey. This removed any pus and prevented it returning not sure how accessible the abscess is?
