Flooring for indoor buns

Rhianna

Wise Old Thumper
Since Cherry had her leg amputated - with lots of problems afterwards - she and her husbun, Hovis, have moved into the kitchen.

Neither will use a litter tray and there are puddles and bunny droppings all over the floor. It is driving me mad. I have a very old washing machine, which has already blocked once, and within five minutes of me putting fresh rugs down they are wet again.

Hovis now has sore hocks. He went to the vet yesterday and she gave metacam and baytril but said I need to change the surface of the floor to something like a duvet. I can't cover the kitchen in a duvet and they will pee all over it anyway. His hocks were fine when he was outside on the concrete so I have no idea why he has problems now.

I am at my wits end. The constant mess was bad enough. I can live with it but am having a hysterectomy on 28 Sept so won't be able to hoover, brush or use washing machine and can't ask my friends to clear up after the rabbits. Now Hovis has such sore legs something needs to be done, but I don't know what. The vet said to give them a smaller area with a duvet in but when Hovis and Cherry were in a pen in my bedroom after Cherry's op he started attacking her because of the lack of space. They now have their close bond back again - and she needs him to groom the bits she can't reach.

I know I am really stresed at the moment and not thinking clearly but I can't come up with a solution that will work for these two.

Help!!!! - please :):)

I find vet bed the most wonderful thing in the world for peeing and sore hocks :)

We use stable matting inside as well as out :)

Angelica is doing absolutely fine outside on her stable matting. Can they not go back out now cherry has healed?

My specialist said the only way to get rid of sore hocks is to bandage the leg up.

I've always found vetbed really good and easy to wash.

I use the cheapest carpet tiles in B and Q.
They're good because they're cheap so there's not enough pile for Ludo to chew on and if there are any accidents you can pull up the single tile and chuck it away.

Cherry's wound still hasn't healed. It's improved but she had abscesses where her body rejected the stitches and John had to redo things and she got abscesses again. She also had a lung infection and her breathing is still faster than usual. If I put her outside I would have to bond her and Hovis with one of my pairs - and I don't think either she or Hovis are up to that.

It's all a bit of a nightmare.

We use vetbed for our bunnies although they did dig at it so now they have vetbed with some carpet offcuts over the top (laid over a wooden floor). It means they have a much softer and squishier surface but they don't try to eat the carpet. I also popped a Pet Rebellion carpet runner in which although not as thick they do seem to like and it's non-slip just like the vet-bed we use.

For my old arthritic bun who leaves pee puddles and is prone to getting sore hocks, I use foam tiles for soft flooring, with disposable puppy pee pads on top. Then all I have to do is just change out the pee pads when needed and toss the soiled ones. The only problem would be if your rabbits wanted to dig and chew at the pee pads or foam tiles.
