Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Need Help!!!

Hello everyone!!!
I m very new to here. Also very new to rabbit keeping.
I bought a rabbit from shop. And it's quite small. After 4 days at home, he/she stop eating and her tummy is very full. I just decided to go to vet. But there are no vet for rabbit here. But the vet said to give her chloramphenicol 3 times a day. And i read some article from internet.
I give her electrolyte water and force feeding with eye dropper.and I also give her metronidazole. After 1 day, she started to poop but poop with the mucus on it. Now it has been 3 days. Poops are still soft and she refuse to eat. So I still force feeding.
If someone help me and direct me what to do.
Thank you so much.

Sorry to hear this hope rabbit pulls through

Has it got hay to eat if it is refusing to eat try her on some fresh herbs they tend to like parsley, coriander and basil but only small amounts

do you know how old she is if she is only small may have been taken from mom too early so may struggle to end just to being by herself so young :(

Someone else will have more input than me I have never had to deal with a little one not eating :( good luck

Thanks for the reply. She is not just eating, also stop pooping. I don't know the age, it's about 1/4 lb.

That is very small If the rabbit is only 1/4 lb :( Are you sure that the rabbit was eating before you got it? It may not be weaned properly yet? Was it in with its mother when you bought it?

When i bought she eat well and poops well. After 4 days arrived home stop poop and eating. And as i mensioned just use antibiotic and this evening she startedvto eat parsely . But poops are like mucus.

where are you located?

It sounds like your vet has given eye drops and antibiotic but I'm not sure why for not eating.

Mucus in the poo can be a sign of inflammation of the gut.

Do you have any other vets in your area that specialise in exotic vets as it sounds like your bunny is not well?

I m from Myanmar. There is no vet for bunny. It has been 3days treating Chloramphenicol and metronizole. Everyday I forced feed her. Started to pòop 2days ago. Today I gave her parsely and started to eat.
I am just worry that poops are still very soft and mixwith mucus. Tonight i decided to stop Chloramphenicol. And still give her metro. Luckly §he still survive where there is no support for rabbit kèping. I just try to collect information from internet.
I really need advice what to do next.
Thanks

It sounds like your bunny may have had bacterial/mucoid enteritis.

If she is starting to eat a little on her own, that usually means the stomach is starting to feel better. A rabbit that is still in pain or feeling very sick, won't want to eat on it's own. So eating a little parsley is a very good sign of her improving.

The mucous in the poop is from irritation to the digestive tract, and it is normal for this to occur after a serious digestive problem like your bunny has had. As she starts to feel better and eat better on her own, her poop should also start to look more normal, and the mucous and soft poop will clear up.

I personally would still continue with the antibiotics for a few more days if this is what the vet advised, as they are helping to control the pathogenic bacteria that likely caused the problems in your bunny's digestive tract. Even though the vet you saw isn't a rabbit vet, it actually sounds like they did the right thing and prescribed the right medicine. It may be what saved your bunnies life.

Also continue to force feed her until she is eating better on her own. As she eats more on her own, you can gradually decrease the amount that you need to force feed. And just be careful with force feeding. It's important to make sure to force feed slowly, giving your bunny time to chew and swallow, so she doesn't aspirate the food or water, which could lead to pneumonia if it happened.

As long as your bunny continues to eat more on her own and continues to improve, it's likely she will be back to normal in a few days.
