  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What's the difference?

Hi everyone, I was just after a little advice.

How can you tell the difference between tooth grinding and tooth purring? I thought I had it down but sometimes what I think is my bun teeth purring is slightly louder! He's not in pain as he's all flopped out, he's eating normally, pooing normally and running around as per usual. Is it possible for tooth purring to be slightly louder like this?

You will know the difference, your bun will be purring / chattering in contentment. The sound can vary, but if a bun is grinding in pain it is loud and an awful sound :(

There is also the third version, where a bun is rasping off the ends of molars to make a smooth grinding surface. That sounds quite choppy and does't last long :)

I agree with Kermit, pain related tooth grinding is very loud and often accompanied by the Rabbit squinting their eyes and if they are 'uppy eared' Rabbits their ears are often in the 'anxious' position. Pain related tooth grinding is something we all hope never to hear.

Phew feel a little more relaxed about it now. I swear I spend half my life on the floor listening and watching! [emoji16]
