  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scrappy's just fallen over while grooming - advice please :(

Hi all. Just witnessed a strange incident and would appreciate any thoughts and/or advice.

Scrappy was just grooming herself, she was up on her hind legs and was twisted round grooming her back. I think she reached too far back and ended up falling backwards. Luckily she was on a soft rug so didn't bang into anything hard. I am however concerned about the lack of balance. Was she just being clumsy and overreaching or could it be an indication of something more sinister (ie an illness that can cause loss of balance)?

She had a routine check up yesterday and there doesn't appear to be any issues with her ears (apart from a bit of wax) and she is not overweight. She is booked in for a dental on the 7th September. She seemed fine straight after she fell over - she ran over to me for a cuddle and fuss and has just run over to her hay box and is eating normally.

Thanks

Daisy-boo often reaches up to far when begging for food, and does a backward roll. Think it's fine, just over enthusiasm!

Yeah both of mine do it sometimes, though more Bunbuns, Fluffy less (he's smarter), but it sounds fine to me from what you described.

It was probably a 'one off wobble', but given that you mention that she has waxy ears it would be a good idea to get the Vet to check her ears again when she has her GA/Dental. Ear problems can effect balance. I'd mention the incident to the Vet so that he/she can make sure that all is well in the ear department. It is not that likely that there is a problem, but just something to get re-checked.

Thanks Jane, I will mention this to the vet during the pre-op consultation and ask her to have a really good look in her ears while she's under the GA.
