Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! bleeding?!

New Kit
Hi there, decided to take the bunny I adopted recently on her first walk to the park today. Put the harness on her and she didn't like the harder ground so decided to pick her up and carry her to the park. My boyfriend was carrying her and we got to the park he put her down and I noticed he had blood dotted on his white shirt. Thought she might be in heat as she hasn't been done yet, but googled it and saw they don't get blood then. Can't see any cuts or anything or nothing from her claws, what could this be?

Hi bayliss95, check her hocks.

Also, I wouldn't recommend taking a bunny to a park on a harness. Better off getting her a rabbit run for the garden :)

she loves a run around the garden too, just someone got her the harness as a gift and my friends rabbits all love a walk, I'll give her a check over and avoid walks from now on

Check her over thoroughly, especially check her feet, hocks and all her nails too in case she's pulled one out on the walk.

Rabbits don't come into season or in heat, they're fertile all the time, the only time they get bleeding from the vulva is due to illness or pregnancy/miscarriage. I think it is more likely that the blood is from a wound but it's worth keeping an eye on wee and checking her privates for signs of bleeding.

As territorial animals, going outside of their territory on a walk tends to be quite stressful for rabbits, as it is not a natural behaviour for them - they stick to their territory and don't really roam like horses or dogs for instance. So I think it's a good idea that you're giving up the walks.

With that in mind, could she have done a little wee on your partner's shirt? Depending on what she had been eating, wee can appear blood-coloured and lots of new owners panic about seeing blood in wee when it's just the colour of the wee. This can be caused by certain foods, medication or dehydration. You may be able to tell if it is really blood from how it dries - blood dries brown.

I have a rabbit who loves walking on his harness, but it's not for all bunnies!

Just a thought - if she's going into public areas, has she been vaccinated?

A broken toe nail is the most common cause of blood spots.

I wouldn't advise a harness outside your home, unlike cats and dogs etc. rabbits are prey animals and a lot wants to eat them or just scare them and they'll panic in the unfamilar space.

If you want to use a harness for your garden it needs to be introduced very slowly and some rabbits don't like it. A big wire pen works better - like a pen for puppies. That way they can move about freely but still within a safe space :)
