  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering My Bunny

Hey guys, I have an 11 month old netherland dwarf and I think it's time to get him neutered, he's not aggressive or anything but I've read it's better for their health if they're neutered. He suffered a head injury (got scared and banged his head on his cage) about a month ago, he had anti-inflammatory medicine and painkillers but is now completely better. When my bunny (snoopy) was at the vets for his head injury I mentioned neutering him and the vet said I should wait a while because of the head injury.

How long do you think I should wait before it would be safe to book him in?

Also I'm moving back to uni at the end of september and bunny is coming with me, should I do it after i've moved or try and fit it in now? I'm just worried about stress after the surgery.

Thanks for your help guys!

I would ask the Vet if he considers it safe to neuter Snoopy now, then he will be fully recovered by the time you go back to Uni. Boys usually get over their castration fairly quickly, say in about 3 days. :D

You've now waited a month, so I would call the vet surgery and speak with one of the vets. Mention his history, and ask if it's OK for him to be neutered. Has he had no problems with head tilt or anything subsequent to the injury?

I would also check with the vets to see if it's safe to neuter him now & then get him done before you go back to uni

I had a female spayed on the 21st July (much more invasive) and she was acting like nothing had happens within a week, so I personally would get it over and done with now
Males recover quite quickly and he will be back to himself in no time
Good luck
