After spay, slightly worried

You'll have to excuse me if this is in the wrong section.

After being advised by you lovely people I had my 5 year old female bunny spayed yesterday but I'm a little worried.

Her and her neutered male friend went to the vets together yesterday morning and were collected late afternoon.
So I understand that she would not be completely herself and would be drowsy etc, I have been keeping an eye on her eating, pooing and drinking obviously and she has been drinking as normal, there is poo that I think is hers but it can be difficult to tell with two rabbits together but I cannot get her to eat normal pellet food, i have managed to tempt her into eating a few dandelion leaves (they're her favourite) and i think she's eaten some hay so it's not as if she's not eaten anything but I wish she would eat more, should I be worried?
She's still quite quiet as well and although slightly more alert she's lying down quite alot.

Very proud of my male however as he can be boisterous and has been very good around her so far.

Would just like to add that I am taking her back to the vets late this afternoon for a follow up appointment so I will of course tell the vet about my concern, I just wondered if I should be worried or its fairly normal?

Thank you in advance [emoji4]

Have you got some metacam which is pain relief for her. The vet should give you at least a few days worth.

Rabbits go off their pelleted food after a spay, try to tempt her with fresh food like herbs, grass, dandelions as you are doing.

Ah, well done you three :)

As CPayne said - did they give you Metacam? Usually for about 5 days, or until the post-spay check up.

I find coriander and rose leaves quite tempting when a bun is off colour. Also a teeny bit of hard baked brown toast or a few sunflower seeds. something she doesn't usually have, to kick start the appetite.

Good luck with her xx

I put the metacam on a tiny bit of Weetabix as most rabbits like that too and less stressful than syringing feeding for everyone involved.

The vet gave her some before she was given back to me, but the vet didn't give any to me to give her, I'm going back to the vets in about an hour so I shall see if the vet will give me some, thank you all for the advice.
I'm happy to hear its normal for her to be off her pellets for a few days though as that was worrying me the most x

Parsley, rocket and willow are good foods to tempt Mabel with when she's a bit offf her food. I think all rabbits are different in what tempts them first. Freshly snipped grass is also good.

When I had my bunny spayed I was very worried for the first 24 hours. I hadn't seen her drink anything and she wouldn't eat her usual food. All I could get her to eat was some parsley and a bit of carrot- I would only get her to eat by hand feeding her though. I wet the parsley so she was getting some water that way. You need to make sure she is getting the metacam. I found she did improve a lot after the first 24 hours were over. Good luck

Don't leave without the metacam. Your rabbit will be in pain, it's like us having a major op without any pain relief. The injection lasts 24 hours.

I went to a talk from my specialist and he said a lot of vets don't give enough pain relief after an op and it's not the op itself that puts rabbits in danger it's the lack of pain relief as they then won't eat and then go into statis.

I was also given an antibiotic and fibre plex to encourage eating.

I would also give her a water bowl if she hasn't got one already. It's easier for them to drink from and they will usually drink more from a bowl.

Much much better thank you for asking, still can't get her to eat pellets but she's been eating hay and some greens, drinking lots and is pooing, she's also much more alert and active. I'm a much happier bunny mommy 😊

Yes it takes a while. Did you get more pain relief? Doughnut ate her pellets on about day three I think. I wouldn't worry about it, pellets will soon be her favourite thing again. As long as she's eating hay and pooping then she's getting better.

The vet gave her some more yes, I'm still trying her with pellets but she keeps turning her nose up to them. She's still quite angry with me and turns her back to me quite a lot haha, I suppose I'm the nasty lady who made her go to the vets and have surgery and will be for a while yet, oops haha

Just put a few out for her, you will find they will suddenly be gone soon :)

Yes but it's in her interest in the long run. She's obviously feeling better since she's sulking.
