Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nail broken off, holding up paw

Hi

Just looking for advice.

My rabbit seems to be favouring his right paw. He is putting weight on it but when he is sitting up he tends told hold it up a little.
It turns out one of his nails has broken off. It looks broken down at the toe but it hasn't been completely pulled out. It looks clean, no bleeding, just slightly red around the area.
Should I take him to the vet or is there something I can do or will the tenderness go away overtime?

If you are worried you can always get it looked at, broken nails can be very painful, they can look ok but be split right down the nail.

I would probably take him if he's holding it up just to get it checked and get him some painkiller.

Usually a nail like that will heal up fine. Do you know when he did it? If it just happened you could keep an eye for a few hours and give it a chance for the sting to wear off, but otherwise I'd be tempted to get the vet to check in case he damaged to toe doing whatever it was that cause the nail to come off and that's making him limp.
