The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Rabbit vets Surrey and spaying

Hi, I am the proud owner of two new bunnies, the male is neutered but I need to have his sister spayed, I am very nervous about the whole thing and I know you need to have a good vet! I got the RWAF 'rabbit friendly vets' recommendations for our area and phoned the closest one but wasn't really inspired with confidence when they couldn't answer any of my questions and said they didn't do many rabbit spays. Ideally I would like someone who does them quite frequently! So I just wondered if anyone has had a rabbit spayed in this area (we are near Leatherhead), or has any really good rabbit vets which they recommend? Thank you!

Hi

I've found this link for you with recommendations. You do really need a good vet and someone who has done lots of spays.

Good luck. I go to a specialist in Maidstone, it's a 30 minute drive but well worth it to get the right person for your little bunnies.

A good vet will send you home with lots of pain relief for your little one and don't forget to get lots of fresh herbs/veg or grass in for her as rabbits go off pellets for a few days when they are poorly.

I live right on the border of Surrey/west London & when Binky was spayed on the 21st July 2015 I travelled to twickenham vets, took me about 20/25mins
Very happy with the spay, the incision was really small and I'd trust any of their vets to do the surgery
Still have to have Bella booked in and Spayed but I trust them
I'm pretty sure they're down Hampton road, so may be too far for you - if you think you can get there let me know and I'll post a website link, on my phone at the moment so can't leave without loosing the message!x

Hi, thank you very much for the replies - think Twickenham might be a bit far unfortunately, the Horsham one probably nearest but still 35/40 mins, still I guess it is better for the bunnies to have a bit more travelling time but be in experienced hands! Out of interest what age did you have your bunnies spayed as I have read different things?

Binky was 2yrs 5 months (person circumstances ment I couldn't get her done till then unfortunately) though I'd say if I could have had them spayed at 6 months old I would have

She was eating, drinking, poo'ing & wee'ing the same night though I'm aware not all are that easy

She didn't want to eat pellets for the first two or three days, she was eating veggies, herbs, hay & forage/herbage...they prefer the more natural stuff after

She had to have her metacam put onto a basil leaf for her to take it!

Poo's were also on the small side for the first three-Ish days due to the GA

Hope this helps, you're doing the right things for your bunnies as the risk for uterine cancer as they get older isn't worth it, and it enables them to stay living together (if they already are sorry I'm not sure!) as my girls had to be split up young due to hormones and fighting so it's definitely worth getting them done

Doughnut was 6 months. You can do it a bit earlier but Doughnut was too little, they have to be over a certain weight. She is still only 1.3kg so still a tiddler.

I put the metacam and antibiotics on a little bit of weetabix, most rabbits love weetabix and it's less hassle and stressful than trying to syringe feed. She didn't eat when I got her home in the evening and I was upset to see she hadn't eaten her pellets in the morning, not knowing they go off pellets. She started eating her really expensive green hay by about midday as I was thinking of taking her back to the vets due to her not eating. The initial injection of pain relief lasts 24 hours so you'll have to start the meds the following morning. I had to take her back a week later, they checked the wound and took the stitches out. The inside was glued and outside external stitches. I put her in her hutch for the first 24 hours as she was painfree they don't feel the stitches, so need to rest so they don't break them.

Thank you both for the advice - like the tip about the weetabix!! I probably have a couple of months to prepare then as she is only little still, I don't even know what treats she likes yet as haven't dared introduce anything yet for fear of upsetting their stomachs!
