  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Anyone still up please - need help with syringe feeding!

Young Bun
Sorry it's late..... buns were spayed today, and I've been sent home with Ox Bow Critical Care - the same one as on this thread: http://www.foreverfeistychinchilla.org/first-aid-kit.html

The only issue is that none of the instructions are in English, and the dosage instruction says refer to packaging.

I did discuss how to administer with the nurse, but I have a brain like a sieve. I'm pretty sure she said to use 3 tablespoons of product and use warm water to make it the required consistency (I think 5 of water for gloopy, and more if I wanted it runnier).

Does anyone still awake use this stuff please!

I use oxbow for one of my chinchillas, who has severe dental disease. He helps himself and I make it into a thick cream like consistency.
I have never syringe fed a newly operated on rabbit, I'm not keen on doing it, especially while they are still recovering from an anaesthetic, however that is a personal opinion and I'm not saying to 'do as I do'. 😊
I would make the consistency quite thin and watery for it to come out of the syringe as the bore of a syringe is quite narrow and the bits are likely to clog it up.
