Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit Broken Heel/Sore Ears

hi all, my rabbit has recently had heel surgery as he managed to break it :( he is having to wear a collar (lampshade) so he doesnt go for the foot.
1. is there anything i can put over the banage on his foot so he doesnt bite it when i take the collar off so he can clean himself
2. anything to help with the sore patches from the collars on his ears.

thank you xx

Hi Charlotte

I'm sorry to hear about your poor bunny!

The collar shouldn't rub on his ears, so I think you could go back to the vet and ask they put one on that is more his size ... For sore patches though I would recommend calendula ointment or aloe vera.

Regarding biting his bandage - it's a difficult one. I think you'll have to watch him carefully when you take the collar off and make sure he doesn't nibble away at it. You could try dabbing a bit of essential oil of lavender or lemon on it - just a touch - which may deter him from going near it.

Please let me know how he goes with his problem - it must be worrying for you?

Aww poor chap, as said the collar shouldn't rub so it may need adjusting. If it's the edge of the plastic, putting sticky plasters around the edge over the plastic may make it softer.

You might have trouble getting something he won't bite. You can wrap extra bandage over eg vet wrap but bunnies teeth are very sharp so it might just be a case of sitting with him and poking him if he tries to chew.
