The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Misaligned Teeth........what to do ?

Hedgender

New Kit
Our little fella Rodney is having problems with his teeth

We have had them ground back a couple of times now, which he hates and gets him very agitated

Unfortunately it doesn't look as if the problem is going to get any better

Have any of you had your rabbits front teeth removed ? I know it is a nasty op however his quality of life is important

He is such a loveable cute little chap ( dwarf lop ) just coming up to his 3rd birthday

Regards John

Hi John

Bunnies teeth can be removed and they can live quite happily without them..

Someone will be along shortly to further advise but its an op that bunnies tolerate and to be honest will make their little lives a lot more bearable...

All the best

Hello John

Incisor removal is not a nasty op at all! It's one of the best and kindest things you can do for a bunny who is struggling with front teeth issues.

I would say if you're thinking of having his incisors removed, make absolutely sure you have a confident vet, or better still, someone who specialises in rabbits. Grinding down a rabbit's front teeth can be very painful, so I think you're doing him a great service by considering other options :thumb:

Thank you both for the positive comments :D
Rodders is such an important member of our family we want the best for him ( we have 3 other bunnies Rosemary, Lilley and Barrie ) but Rodders is my boy he follows me everywhere
I am going to have a chat with the vet tomorrow......will keep you posted ;)

There are loads of RU buns with their Incisors removed. My Herbie has had it done....twice! One tooth plus pegs grew back after the 1st op, then he had it again, now two pegs grow back. He gets them burred every 6weeks(ish) and he is OK with it.

Buns cope fine with no incisors.

My Scooby had tusks for incisors. I had them removed very soon after I adopted him. It really was the best thing for him and he is so much better without them.

It took him a while to resume proper eating, not because of any problem with the extraction, he was just a bit slow to adjust to picking up certain foods with his lips. He now eats everything, including hay and readigrass. Certain veg has to be prepared in a way that he can easily pick it up, so cabbage in small strips, kale in bite-sized pieces etc, but other than that he is just a normal bunny.

awww I am sure your bun will be fine, rabbit diets are meant to mainly be hay hay and more hay (grass included) its the molar back teeth they use to chomp this hay down, when they are using their back teeth , they move their jaw for those teeth only and not incisors, same when using incisors say to bite at something, they realign their jaws so then the molar teeth don't touch, amazing really, considering this, rabbits can do fine without incisors if need removing, I wouldn't worry to much
