Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Metacam / 180ml bottle?

cara

Alpha Buck
I am hopeless at maths and metric in particular.

I am going to order Metacam online (will get a prescription) but cannot work out how far a bottle will go.

I am giving Rosie .10 once a day. How many days do I get in a 180ml bottle? (£19.57 from VetUk). Is 180ml a huge amount to buy?

Sounds like a maths question from my school days

Are you sure you are giving 0.10 and not 1ml a day? I've just been giving doughnut for a RTI 0.3 twice a day but have been able to go up to 0.5ml.

Its me being dim again  It is indeed 1ml and is clearly marked on the syringe. Thanks for pointing this out :)

Also, I do wonder if a twice daily dose is better than once daily. There seem to be many schools of thought on either once or twice a day.

With 1ml a day, the bottle will last 180 days, so just under 6 months. The bottle needs to be used within 6 months of opening so that works out just about right - no wastage and it'll also be more economical to buy that size than a smaller one. :D

With the dosing, I think it depends. I recall somebody saying that, for pain relief, it's better to split into two doses but the anti-inflammatory effects last for 24 hrs so it depends why you're using it.

I think it also depends on the level of pain too & whether it's better to split into two and take the edge off the pain for longer, or go with the higher dose, which is going to relieve the pain more efficiently but not for as long.... :?

My specialist always splits it for continued relief. You could always call your vet and ask his thoughts about splitting it or his reasoning for just one dose. It may be as Karen described above.

Thanks for replies :)

The pain/discomfort Rosie suffers is very difficult to quantify. It is my assumption that she is in discomfort as her back leg/s are very gammy and she is awkward on them. The vet is in agreement. Otherwise she eats, poos, pees etc as normal.

I have no idea if the dose is in/sufficient or more than she needs. The vet prescribed .9ml but I am giving her 1.0 as it is on toast and I imagine some is lost as crumbs on the floor. Rosie is 13 years and 2.2 kg. At her age, I would rather dose at the upper end of the scale rather than not give relief to any pain she may have.

Is your vet rabbit savvy? It does seem a low dose as Doughnuts been on 0.5ml 3 times a day at max and she is 1.3kg. Maybe speak to the vet and see if you can up it necessary when she needs it.

Remember that the dog metacam is 3x the concentration of the cat metacam - which one has your vet prescribed? Both are OK for rabbits, but you will use a smaller volume of the dog version, so it may be easier to dose if it is 1ml of the dog one (vs 3ml of the cat one).

I was assuming it's the dog one as 1ml is still low. 1ml of the cat one wouldn't touch hardly any pain!

I would be giving 1ml twice a day at that weight but obviously that's something to be discussed with your vet.

My vet has prescribed less than that amount daily

I have to say, I have never heard of it being prescribed three times daily, but I guess 'in extremes' it's needed ... Good to know :thumb:

Yes I gave it to her morning, then when I got home in the evening then before I went to bed. This was short term though, then I dropped a dose and did 0.5ml twice a day.

Yes that's what I would think especially if you still think the rabbit's in pain. I'd just call to say you think she is still suffering and would like to put it up.

I think vets approach things different, a lower dose and up it if necessary and some go for the higher dose so they are pain free then reduce it to a lower level.

I wouldn't get the 180ml bottle - it's gigantic and it's a pain to order online. Some sites won't let you order the big sizes of the dog metacam unless it is being ordered for a dog, it's not compatible with a rabbit 'pet profile'.

Until very recently I had never met anyone in the veterinary field who suggested 'upping' the dose. The dose was the dose, and if my rabbit was in pain there was never a suggestion to go higher.

I'm so glad times have changed, and owners are more informed :thumb:
